There are some that work for another application. But not for dmax. The next guy that works on it will not be happy

    Extrude hone

Jim always treats me great. I have a tip though. Be sure and clean the nozzles up. Get the carbon off and use a can of brake clean and watch spray pattern. A clogged hole will stay small as others grow. The man can only do his best with what you give him. I have sent new nozzles up and that is...

Question number 2 if we cut the caps when does it become needed to shim under the girdle?? How much do you want to bow it down?

That is exactly what I was doing but I am not allowed to post pics here anymore. I am sure once you post up the pic it will make the discussion much easier.

    Lly rebuild

I just saw a thread where the oval bowls were being sold for 1900 without rings. Like I said I am not all knowledgeable on oval bowl pistons, nor I have researched them. I have heard lots of good reviews and I have not read a bad review on them. If it was my truck I do not trust a cast piston...

    Main Cap Walk

To me its fairly cut and dry. If the block is tore up any fix you have to fudge a little at the mating area of main bore. I get what fingers is saying it may be minor fudging by a damn good machinist. But in a 1000rwhp build and an engine known for crank flex, how much fudging is too much...

    Lly rebuild

I don't want to be a smartass, but tell me 1 100o rwhp engine with more than 10k let alone 100k in them. They are tested in lower hp engines for long term durability and all the results have been extrapolated out. the custom rings are around 300 to 500 dollars depending if you choose stainless...

    Main Cap Walk

That is what I think we are all trying to understand. How do you maintain the bore size in the recessed bearing area of cap. If you open it up maybe a thou or 2 so that the bearing backing plating material does not scrape on install, will this effect bearing crush? And this is so hard to...

    $396.02 U-joint ?

It does not matter how long it was worked on, would you rather pay for a guy who knows his sh%t to do it in 10 minutes, or pay for a guy that never has done it to take all day. That why there is a labor guide and we charge flat rate. As long as the techs take pride in the work its a great system

    Broken Crankshaft Count?

I remmeber some international motors that would break a crank if the belt was too tight. I am thinking they were in buses. If I can ever remember I will tell you the exact model. It could be detroits i just can't remember but I bet someone does.

thanks for chiming in as I am especially concerned with the area of the bearing that potrudes. At that area the bearing could potientially be wider than the cap as it is torques down, once torqued down the circle will be perfect since it was align honed. However with the crank in place and only...

    Main Cap Walk

An oversize bearing is the only way to do this. However main bearings come in undersize only for dmax, you would need to find a housing bore that is oversized in the apa guide and then spec a custom bearing. The next guy to work on it will hate you for this. IF YOU CUT THE CAP MATING SURFACE...

    $396.02 U-joint ?

I think they overcharged you according to the gm list price and mitchell labor guide. I would say by 34.7%

    Main Cap Walk

Thats exactly how it has to happen. the cap is curled and somehow the saddle in the block has survived, or at least it did not effect the part where the bearing rides. You cut the cap to get in the good meat. There is an art to it, and only the best machinist can get this done and have a perfect...

    $396.02 U-joint ?

It was probably at a rate of 120 dollars/hour and at 1.4 hours. The u joint is around 115 dollars at the dealer. I would think maybe 300 tops with tax and materials, and 200 at an independent shop. Did the dealer do anything else to the truck or was there excessice rust, broken bolts in the...

    Main Cap Walk

I won't speak for everyone Jeff, but when i say cut a cap I mean the flat part on a bridge port and then I go line bore it as part of the block where I have some meat. It is very rare the cap is rounded and not the saddles in the block. But it does happen on occasion and is a fairly easy fix.

    Main Cap Walk

If you do anything other than knurl the caps and cut the caps you will push the crank up to tight against the cam gear in a gear to gear timing setup. The only fix I have ever seen is to use a larger housing bore bearing from another application and recut the tabs on a bridgeport. Than grind the...
