:thumb:Looks good Russel What waistgate you going with?

I think the only thing oi would do other then making sure it spins free is just make sure your oil feed line is the last thing to get hooked up and pour a little oil in right before your gonna crank it just like any other new turbo.

AND GET THAT DAM THING ON I WANT TO HEAR IT SPOOL UP

I'm going to use the stock one for now, see how it preforms.
That's what I was thinking, I obviously put oil in everything as I was putting it together.
I'm with you there, I've been wanting it installed for a LONG time. I completed the smoker last weekend so this Saturday I'm going to finish the top side creeper and possibly take the stock downpipe off.

I don't think it's going to move much air without a compressor wheel...

Looks good though. :thumb:

Agreed :thumb:
When I take the stock turbo off I'm going to use that compressor wheel being I destroyed the other one removing it.
I want to use the stock wheel first so I've got a base line to see if all my work paid off or not.

Thanks, I have a feeling I've put WAY to much time into it. :roflmao:

Let us all know how she works! :thumb:

I'll definitely be posting my results, I haven't spent ALL this time to not inform others what I once thought of doing.
A rebuild write up will also be done once I have the turbo installed and take the time to sort through the pictures in order to do a quality write up.

Thanks for all the encouraging words and not calling me stupid, at least not that much, haha :D:rofl:
I'll take video of before/after of both the down pipe and turbo; hopefully my camera as a good audio microphone.

Well the day has come, out with the old in with the modified :D.

Just got done swapping the turbo this evening and I took it for a spin. Right off the bat I notice at idle it sounds the same and maybe slightly louder when driving down the road a low speeds. It also doesn't whistle as much as it did before while driving at lower speeds.

Took it out on the highway and noticed there is a screeching sound, not from a loose fan belt; I'm wondering if there's a leak in one of the exhaust gaskets? It starts screeching at around 3 - 4 psi of boost then gets louder the more throttle you give it. There's no black smoke so I'm ruling out a boost leak at this point.
Could it be possible that my intake or exhaust wheel is hitting the housing or if it did would there be a BOOM sound?

I ran out of time to dig into it for today so I'll have to wait till next weekend, I home it's nothing bad.

I've got video of before and after install of the downpipe as well as after installing the modified turbo but I'll have to get it up loaded later.

Enjoy the pictures, my wife came out to see if I was still alive and took a few pictures too. :D

I was thinking a boost leak too, it isn't smoking at all but if it's a small leak it wouldn't smoke.
I'll try get them on tonight when I get home.

I don't know why I didn't make one sooner, it would have made replacing the injectors SO much easier.

Finally got the video uploaded from my test run, it sounds terrible.

I'm wondering if I didn't get that bottom downpipe bolt tight? I also put new up-pipe gaskets on, I wonder if one of them isn't tight enough? I torqued them to the proper spec's, I'll have to go around and re-torque them this weekend.

Let me know what you guys think it is.

Thanks,

Figured I'd do a little up date being I've got a moment.

I realized what was causing the sound. When I was enlarging the ports where the up pipes bolt to I dug into one of the threaded holes. At the time I didn't think anything of it(mainly b/c I'm retarded ) but when I'm under boost the exhaust gases are going out that hole, through the threads, and leaking out the head of the bolt.

The biggest thing I noticed with the ported and polished turbo was the decrease in whistle, which isn't a bad thing. Whistling usually means restriction and being I enlarged and polished everything I increased the air flow which is obviously a good thing.
I maybe completely wrong about this but that's what I've been thinking and it makes sense in my mind.

Being I've got the other IHI turbo I pulled off I'm going to port and polish that one out today and obviously not dig into any threaded holes, haha .
And with any luck I'll be swapping it out next weekend to test it out.

Got the turbo just about done today, just have to polish the back side of the intake cover and paint the front cover. Once that gets done tomorrow morning I'll be swapping her in.
I didn't go as extreme this time being where it got me last time, haha :D.
I also didn't touch the waste gate ports being when they do open if the ports are larger I'm going to loose more boost than if they were stock sided. We'll see how it preforms tomorrow. I've also got a new set of tail lights to install, passenger side just about feel off back in May .

Just need to figure out what color I want to paint the intake cover, maybe a metallic blue, or an orange. I was thinking green but a certain someone has already covered his engine bay in green paint. :D:D

Got the turbo all polished up, painted, and installed on Sunday so I took it for a quick spin. This swap was pretty quick from the last one, having popped loose the down and up pipes bolts loose made it easier.

First thing I notice was NO SCREECHING this time :thumb:. It feel stronger and seems to take off/accelerate better/faster than the unmodified stock turbo; also sounds the same at idle. Accelerating from a stop it picks up pretty quick and the turbo whistle is fairly pronounced/loud; that was with the windows rolled about half way down but even rolled up it seems to be more notice able, I'll take it out for another spin and try get some video of it to post up.

I didn't get a good look at where my EGT's topped out at but I did notice it seemed to be about 100 deg's lower than before modifying it. One thing that did seem to catch my eye was that when letting off the throttle EGT's dropped quite fast. When coming to a stop like or turning into the driveway EGT's would drop to 300 - 400 deg's quick.

I may not get to it this weekend but we'll see, I've got a trailer to paint, I'll take it out for some more testing to see of it performs; put some cruising miles on it as well as some 0 - 60 times to compare it to before the swap.

I was able to do this one pretty quick; about 10 - 11 hours from dismantle of the turbo, machining the ports out, wet sanding, painting the cover to assembly. Just to give everybody a rough idea of what it takes.

Alright, enough chatting on to the pictures. :happy2:

I just used metalic duplicolor paint followed by clear coat from Canadian tire, nothing special. I took a 60grit flap wheel to it to remove all the casting marks on it. I was really happy how it turned out.

Thought I'd do a little update being I haven't posted anything for awhile.
I sent the turbo off to a friend so he could dyno it for me. The turbo gained an additional 31hp over the original stock turbo. He also took it to the track where it consistenally put down 12.3 to 12.29, obviously this was before it snowed.
He said it lights instantly and is a blast to drive.

I've got an LLY turbo all torn apart to port and polish next. I'm interested to see how much it improves them being they're castings aren't so rough.

That's awesome. I was wondering when you would update this. I bet this would be a great addition for guys running a s400 over the stocker as well! Keep us updated on the garrett! :thumb:

The IHI lights quick and goes like a raped ape.

If I remember right the guy I'm doing the LLY turbo for is twinning it with an S475. I'd like to see how it does as a single but we'll fine out.
