Well even the clutch packs inside the transmissions are freaking custom.. Pulled em apart to inspect and found primary disks were about 70% worn. So I ask Tyson what he borrowed the parts from for these custom, hand machined, 2spd trans.

Cadillac Northstar is primary set, minus 0.245 off the outsides. Who'd have guess that?? Reverse set is outa Allison, and 1st gear band also Allison, we think... So I chalked $280 worth of brand new clutches up in a 1950's lathe and hoped for the best..

Engines and trans dropping in the boat this Saturday if anyone's board..

You've got my lathe beat; best I can tell it is from 1890-1910. Still works fine for a lot of things, just not as easy as modern lathes. Want to cut threads? Yeah, that'll take 15 minutes to set up, and there's no such thing as metric. Change speed? 5 minutes. On my dad's Jet, 15 seconds tweaking knobs and you're set.

I'm anxiously waiting to hear how the install goes. I'm really excited to see it this close to completion!

That lathe might be older than 50's since it uses Roman Numerals.. lol.

Those transmission cases and most of the pieces on the floor were made by hand on a Bridgeport, and not by CAD on a Haas.. Said he made 20 of them back in 2004.

They are as beefy as they are compact. 2 fwd speed servo shifted, 2000hp rated in a 12" long case. Same size as a velvet drive...

What was that no-OD Allison that came behind the cummins in medium duty trucks like buses and such? Think it was an AT545? Maybe it has bands?

I think that band is a reverse band off a 727 torqueflite. Or 47re, 48re...same thing. Looks exactly the same

haven't found any bands shown/listed on parts blow up diagharms for AT545

My transmission buddy didn't recognize it as anything common. Too beefy. Luckily it's in good shape. Inside filter is dodge for sure.

New fwd clutch packs installed and everything back together. From the outside these look like a crash box unit.

A stereo system??

Those are the first gear solenoids. One unlocks the main clutch set, the other applies the band. Without power, these operate as a typical single speed velvet drive.

Guessing solenoids needed a high amperage hit to open em.

Is it in parallel with the solenoid?

If so wouldn't that create an LC circuit on activation and deactivation. I think it would create some weird delays on opening and closing the solenoid

Cap reduces the arcing in the relay when it opens.

Ah, now that makes sense. Sort of... wouldn't a film capacitor such as mylar or polyester be better suited for that purpose? Unless one couldn't find a large enough capacitor in that type. I would still think that a polarized electrolytic capacitor would be short lived in that environment as the back emf could reach into the thousands.

Loaded everything up this morning and headed to my buddies shop to use his gantry before rain moved in. Also borrowed a buddies scales to get a package total before dropping them in.

What ya guess one weighs as pictures?

Transmissions included, but no up pipes, turbo, or charge cooler.
