And not being one to take another persons work for granted, I popped a couple top rings down in few random bores. Checked 3 places top to bottom, .026 gap on the money.

Now I'm going to go test my luck blasting this TBC off. Then order some new rings to file down again. Which I haven't personally done since 1993..

Yeah coated only about halfway down. This call also on the suggestion of swain to protect the crown. Zoom in on piston pic post 783.

NC, I ran down to Raleigh to check out an LT5 engine my buddy at Crawford Racing is doing. Little CANBUS and L5P throttle body hacking side project.

Cool, my reg cab is at Mayhem in Raleigh for head work and tuning. Bunch of performance shops up that way. You head this way much?

Next time your in Raleigh and staying drive on down to Wilmington, it's about 2 hours. This place is unique, Lots of cool history, downtown is on Cape Fear river, midtown has college and then there's 3 beaches that are each much diffrent from the other. Fishing is great almost year round offshore and inshore as well, if I'm not buried in a console I'll show you around. :hug:

Cool will do.

Gave the glass beater a shot. No luck with fine material. Cleans the soot off nicely, but just smoothes out rough edges on the coating.

So guess I'll be calling up Swain Tech again tomorrow to explain how I'm not risking 5k worth of pistons to remove their F-up's. They said they have a way to safely remove it, so will hope they do. . .

Could you not just remove it from the side of the pistons and leave the top intact? Or are you worried it will flake off and do more damage?

Seems to me if it could resist the blasting maybe it should stay

This set only has couple hours running time. While the other set with 8-10 hours showed much more lifting on the top. So I would like to remove it all and then polish the tops as I had good luck with that approach on previous build on std race cast pistons.

Heck no. Just masked off the decks and wrapped up the rod journals nice and neat. Once we finished couple hone passes, washed everything down with brake clean and hit it with some wd40.
Built these to be serviced quick and easy, this was a good test of that design concept.

I'm leery of grit getting washed down into the mains
Thought about it for a minute, then concluded an 0.0005 gap isn't gonna let much of anything in.. Gravity was on our side also.

Plugged the rod journals, so will just flush the main line with clean oil before installing pistons. Then prelude system same as before when done.

It wasn't really that messy with two guys and a role of towels. Hone a hole, wipe it down, repeat. Garage floor looked much worse... lol.

Pistons made it home.
Looks like they use similar medium to remove the TBC as I tried. With better results at least.

Now to polish 16 of them...

I'm going to guess they used aluminum oxide. Maybe 100 grit

What ever it was didn't get it all under lip. Problem I noticed is, soon as ya hit that tbc with high pressure material, it looks like raw aluminum....

Anyways I got 2 of em done to 3000 on tops and easy to reach areas. Gonna need a little more hand work in the bowl. But they should be good enough to deflect some heat and carbon build up as is. Thanks for the handy tips Mark.

Just wrapping up the sanding on first piston set. Haven't started the final polishing yet.

Going from a sand blasted surface to somewhat shiny (1500) takes about 45 minutes per piston with a low speed dremel tool. Did I mention I dislike coatings??

Rings arrived yesterday, so need to grind all those gaps down again. Then I'm within about 8hrs of where I was end of November..

i mean, worse case you can make a really cool table or lamp with them :D

Just out of curiosity, did you measure bore dia, taper and out-of-round before and after the quick hone? curious if there was any distortion in the little run time and if the ball hone took any out, added any or opened the bore any.
