The smoking is the main problem. I am not as worried about the black specs in the coolant.

Checking balance rates wont do any good because if there is low compression do the a HG leaking the injector will try to compensate. Correct?
I wouldn't mind spending some money to get it diagnosed but I don't want to take it to the dealer and get reamed
yeah probably wouldnt work(balance rates). I would pull the valvecovers and injectors and reseal the cups with new o rings and loctite before i would do gaskets imho

AFAIK the truck has the original injectors what is the likely hood of a sleeve leaking if it hasn't been touched

I thought that if an injector was trying to compensate it would show up on the balance rates. Wouldn't the number for that cylinder be way different from the others? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok Jared,

I checked the hose after 4 hours of not being driven and it was not hard really at all

I let it idle for a couple minutes and it got harder but still could be squished without trying to hard.

The balance rates look good at idle and in drive one is a little higher than the rest but still within spec.

I need to check the balance rate while driving.

The smoke seems to be getting worse.

Oil looks okay still

Well I took it for a 10 mile trip with the stock tune

Hose got fairly hard but I could still collapse it. I will try to compare it to the duramax at work after it has been driven a while.

Now I am at a loss I don't want to spend $1000+ in parts to replace HG's and it be a sleeve. Or go to all the trouble to reseal the sleeves and still pull the motor and spend $1000+ for HG's

How you fix it is going to depend on which you have more of then - time or money. If you are like most of us you don't have enough of either.

Well it looks like it might be an injector.

The rear bumper is black as all hell

And the upper radiator hose seems the same Hardness as the duramax at work

Not sure if you know but it is hard to tell if there is coolant in your oil if you are using dex cool.

It does not turn milky white, it turns into like gel/sludge.

Good news.:)

Which one?

Not absolutely sure. There was one that was reading higher balance rates than the rest but it still didn't seem to bad. It goes into the dealer Monday not sure what the deal is with the coolant I am going to clean out the bottle.

I have no symptoms of a HG or sleeve other than a dirty coolant bottle.
The smoke has gotten worse and the exhaust has a strong diesel smell at idle but it is not smoking at idle yet.

I am kind of scared to drive it. It is probably 25 miles to the dealer

a head gasket wont be blowing black smoke. most every one i have seen were no symptoms other than mysterious coolant loss. i'd bet it is the injectors. what were the balance rates??? the dexcool if properly mixed with water will infact turn into milkshake conditions. i see it all to often here at the dealer. the notorious 3.1,4,5,9 l engines. i would not worry about the jug, clean it and replace the coolant that was in it. they all get real dirty.

I would say half were less than 1 the other half were less than 2 and one was 3 in nueutral and 4 in drive

I checked all the intercooler boots and tightned a few. The tubes were hole free. It Did not make a diffrence the smoke has increased since it first started and is pretty bad now.

If it was a intercooler problem it wouldn't have increased so drastically

It still makes 25 psi with the stock tune on the 4094 and it hits full boost at
3K Rpm

another way you can check injectors is check the return rates. at the stealership the return rates have to be out for warranty. a tech will do it easier but it can be done with efi. go into your scan tool and go to the dvt where you can cut injectors out and such. at the top where it says mpa's for fuel pressure, click that and type in 160 or 170. that will ramp your rp up to 24k which is all they will do in a stock tune. then make sure youve got the pid selection for actual rail pressure and commanded and such. if its commanding 24 it has to be only returning like 18 for the dealer to warranty it. try it out.
