Picking heads tomorrow. Decked, valves recessed, new guides, seals, freeze plugs, the whole 9 yards. Just need to get a set of A gaskets coming. Taking Friday off to spend 3 days getting it all done.

Still 100 overs. Not going bigger till way down the road. Hell I only ran the big tune twice on them.

As you can tell, I care sooooo much about times these days levi . Its sad when the tow tube runs 13.0 flat with a 2.1 60ft vs guys running gutted, maxed out tuning and still getting beat

Speaking of slow, I see you are really falling into the cummins lifestyle with a faster mouth than the truck

So I’ve been really not looking forward to pulling all 32 valve springs with the small hand crank style spring compressor.... that lead me to looking up what guys use and finding that some retro fit a cummins 24v tool to work (Josh, I know your one that did that) and other got the duramax style tool from techtorx or what ever it’s called before it was discontinued. Well I got to thinkin, can’t be that hard to make my own. Might as well give it a shot before dropping 100 bucks and still having to retro fit the cummins one.

After about 4-5 hours of work (half of which was me f**king up bits on the lathe cause I was trying retarded ideas), I think it came out pretty good. Works like it should and should really speed the process up. This all came from 1/4” flat plate, 1.5”OD tube, spare bolts, plasma cutter, grinder, welder, lathe and drill press.

I may or may not open up the holes where the retainers come through. See how it all goes first. I’m pretty stoked on it though!

The tool looks good. I would suggest cutting a bevel on the top side around each valve stem tip. It will make it easier to get the locks in and out without having to compress the springs as much.

One more tip in case you don't already know, if you are using that tool on a set of heads that aren't on a motor with a piston at TDC to hold the valves, you will need to clamp the head down or tap the tool with a hammer to release the locks from the retainer. I tried it one time, and it just pushed the valves down and picked the head up off the surface on which I was working. These were heads that had been running though; heads fresh from the machine shop probably won't be locked down that tight.

yeah thats why i was thinking about making the holes bigger in general. i can bevel them pretty easy if need be. as of now, they come out pretty easy with a magnet.

i had a good feeling that would happen. these pop right out on a fresh machined head but being that i have to take my old springs off that are even stiffer, that may require what you stated. simple enough though. little love taps with a brass hammer wont hurt :D. Thanks for the info josh

95% sure it’s a cracked head in the exhaust valve. I also bent a push rod on the exhaust side on the cyl that was filling with water. Nnniiiccceee, pick up another from my buddy tomorrow.

Cleaned up the pistons and checked them for any cracks or issues as well as thoroughly checked the block/cyl walls for any cracks. Damn thing still looks new in there. I’ll clean the deck and check piston protrusion again just to make sure I didnt hurt a rod with water getting in there

Pulled the springs off the pass head and popped the valves out of cyl 6 (the leaky cyl). Exhaust port right at the valve closest to the exhaust manifold has a nice split in there. Cyl 4 and 8 are just starting to do the same in the same spot. Cyl 2 looks good

Cyl 6. Look at the horizontal crack by the guide. Gunna need to zoom in if your on your phone. I’m 95% sure that’s the culprit

See how far I get tomorrow. With all the prep I need to do, doubt it will be all back together within the day. Spring tool worked titties though. I did put a taper on the valve holes like you said josh, worked way easier then.

My rugged way of getting the truck back all the way into the garage.

Trailer spare. Winch rope under it, hitch through the wheel center and ball holding it from coming off

Was going so well today until it didn’t. That’s part of the block from a head stud just above cyl 3 where it goes into the lifter valley.
