Well I did this cooler about 7 months ago and it has been great in the cooler months hauling my 39' fifth wheel. Now that it is starting to warm up I have had to go from my 3 tune down to 2. Don't get me wrong it still tows just fine, I just don't want to be that guy towing a 65 mph on the interstate. When it hits 95+ degrees that will be me.



My water temps are not a problem but the oil temps will still climb over time. I was wondering if the oil pump had enough flow to add a second cooler of the same size at the back of the truck ( I know about the more turbulent air back so it would have to be ducted) . It would still have -10 hoses throughout. I just don't know about the stock oil pump flow. Thanks for the help.



I would worry about upgrading your main cooler before just adding more restriction. What cooler do you have now both as an auxiliary and as the main cooler mounted on the engine?

I have the stock 04 cooler on the block, it has been rebuilt. Aux is a FLD-DB30618 Fluidyne Oil Cooler -12 hose through out. I could go with a 2020 cooler but then my mocal plate will not fit. I have not seen of anyone making a sandwich plate for the 2020. I know James made an adapter for his and I might have to look into that.

Where do you have your cooler mounted? Do you have fans on it?

That cooler isn't very large, it has a 5.875" tall x 21" wide x 3" deep core. That is only 123.375 square inches (less than 1 square foot of exposure). With that said, you shouldn't be overheating the oil that bad with your setup. Have you verified the temp probe is accurate?

One other point is oil pressure has not dropped below 48 psi @ 2800 rpm so this makes me feel better.

10-4, I would assume that the probe is giving a false reading. If your oil temps really were that high I would expect it to also result in higher coolant temps.

Air dams top bottom and both sides. I don't see anyway for it to get more air.

besides the fact that there very well could be a sensor issue, i would put money you are not getting enough air flow through the cooler...

on thick core coolers, it creates alot of wind resistance. if you are running the skid plate like Sleds, that creates more restriction for air flow as it must come through the cooler and then damn ear dead heads half way up into the skid plate.

you will also have to be at min going over 60mph for any kind of air to really flow through it (atleast what it can get), might need more speed due to the restrictions.

when i swapped from my 3" thick core from killer bee and no fans and went to the derale cooler and spal fan in the exact same spot, i dropped another 10-20* of oil temps just because of consistant air flow and what i would guess to be more than the old cooler saw. the killer bee cooler should have out cooled the derale any day of the week but the air flow wasnt there unless i was going 70mph. I also had stuff behind the cooler the air would hit and again create resistance to flow through the cooler. Having a fan as a puller helps negate that but no air restrictions behind the fan help it achieve its full CFM.



id start with making sure the sensor is good and maybe moving it to the engine oil cooler on the "after cooler" side so you have good comparison numbers against what most read as well. The temp can vary a good amount from pan to pre cooler to post cooler to post aftermarket cooler as josh and a few others have shown over the years.

Will do. At least with this virus crap I have time off to deal with it, now if it will just stop raining.

I'm with James on his assessment, lack of air flow across the cooler. I'm not even sure you could get an electric fans that would be big enough to really pull enough air to make much difference. Thick cores like that are really hard on electric fans (especially fans that would be small enough to fit on that cooler). Your best bet would be to figure out a way to build a shroud behind the cooler and duct it into the factory fan shroud or buy a bigger cooler that you could mount somewhere else with a fan big enough to move a substantial amount of air.

Just wanted to add a small bit to this for anyone wanting to run the 17-19 L5P cooler. When reading through I didn’t see any numbers for the bolts to mount it

To update my problem.


Changing out temp probe solved my issue. Don't know why it failed but that is why parts stores stay in business.

I'm pricing a 2020 oil cooler for a guy, so I wanted to put all the part numbers together in one post that a person would need to do the swap. Here they are:

Cooler: 12701592
Elbow: 12675428
Cooler to elbow gasket: 12676826
Elbow to block gasket: 97192667
Coolant pipe to cooler o-ring: 94011702
Water pump to coolant pipe gasket: 12635594
Long oil cooler bolts: 11588694
Cooler to elbow bolt: 11548820

I was able to reuse the short oil cooler to block bolts on my LBZ, but I believe James said his were just a touch too long on his LB7. You might be able to shim them with a flat washer or you can look up the part number for the new bolts if you don't want to do that. On the elbow, I reused the two bolts from the old cooler, but I dug around and found a matching third bolt for the new one. That's why I included that part number.

Wondering if anyone has looked at this sandwich adapter for the 2020 cooler conversion. It seems this Setrab adaptor has the same filter thread 19-STP76-22-180-22... let me know your thoughts

Need diameters. 2020 cooler has a significantly smaller sealing surface diameter. Setrab doesn’t list that.

Here is what I got from Setrab:

It appears our 19-SPT76-22-180-22 will work great with the 2020 Duramax.

The 2020 Duramax OEM oil filter o-ring is: OD 72mm / ID 63mm and our o-ring is: OD 69mm / ID 60mm

I ordered one to look at it, just want to make sure it will actually flow the full amount for -12 fittings

that should work for sure. there is no need to run an external oil cooler on a 2020 duramax but if you are retrofitting the 2020 cooler to an older truck, this is perfect. just have to run the 2020 oil filter as well.
