Just for sake of conversation...

I'm rocking an 02 LB7. My plan is to swap on a 2020 cooler and then piece together a dual remote bypass filter setup. I'll use the Amsoil filter base and adapter, but machine the ID of my fittings and use -12 hose instead of -8. All said and done, I think it'll up my capacity to 13 or 14 qts. I also like extended oil change intervals and cooler, cleaner oil lasts longer.

I want better cooling, which I've seen that the 2020 provides, but being in eastern NC, I don't believe I need it to the extreme that some of you guys do with a 2020 cooler AND and an external air/oil. I tow my tractor and excavator, heaviest gross weight is around 23.5k and I just use a normal 45hp tow tune.

I should be fine with just the 2020 cooler, right? It's made it 280k with one half that size...so my thought is it certainly won't hurt to have a bigger one and should take care of my oil cooling needs.

Thoughts?

I’d be concerned about adding more heat to the radiator with the 2020 cooler on an 02

As a general rule, I'd agree. However, I've never seen my coolant temps get over 200. 185-186 normal driving and 192-194 towing. The radiator, water pump, upper/lower shrouds, condensor, trans cooler, fan, and fan clutch are all new. I also went with Kodiak/Top Kick (I think...maybe?) fan clutch that kicks on sooner.

That's what makes me think I could get by with it and not have any insurmountable issues. No hills, no weeks of 105+ degree weather, and not towing with a huge amount of power and twins or anything.

You need the cooler, elbow, gasket, some new bolts, and have to clearance the bottom of the heat sheild mount on the exhaust manifold.

Whoops...nvm. You were talking about the earlier cooler. Disregard.

If I want to run the early l5p 14 row cooler do I just need the cooler or do I need the elbow also?

The 17-19 bolts right on but will need a couple longer bolts. Just get new gaskets/o rings so you don’t have to worry about leaks. Same o-rings/gaskets as 01-16

So any longer term review on running either LP5 oil cooler? I ordered a 2020 cooler since i have a coolant leak from that elbow and am expecting twins. Will a radiator upgrade be in order?

I've had mine on for about 6 months now I guess. Seems to be working just fine for me. I see no reason to upgrade the radiator; my coolant temps are pretty much where they were before. Oil temps are about 10-15 degrees cooler and seem to recover a little faster after a hard pull.

No issues with mine. oil stays cooler far longer. lower round temps like josh stated and recovers from hot temps faster.

with what i did with the limo and towing heavy, i needed the extra cooling capacity from the two raditators. most guys probably wont have this issue, specially in your case Dennis where i dont feel you will be towing heavy in high outside temps lol

were did you order it from I am looking to buy one too, cant find one
I ordered mine from a online gm parts place for 240 shipped, but with the whole strike aftermath I don't expect to see it for a week at the soonest. My local dealer had one on the self for 350 retail, but didn't have the elbow in stock and lead time was like 10 days.

James we definitely don't have the outside temp here and fingers crossed, extra cooling will not be need.

Since the my cooler has a small coolant leak I thought I would upgrade to the 17-19 L5P one. Would anyone happen to know if the mounting bolts are different than LBZ ? Also I am assuming they changed the 1/2" NPT plugs to metric ?

I saw the specifics for bolts and plugs for the 2020 one but was not sure if that applied to 17-19 ones also.

short bolts may work fine but the length for the long ones will be different than the 2020 and different for the 01-16. i sold my 17-19 cooler so i cant take measurements.

Building a filled block lb7 pulling motor this winter, has anyone else on here ran a dry engine? If so what kind of oil cooler setup did you use or what kind of oil temps did you see?
We ran no oil cooler at all. We could easily keep it under 200 deg after a pass. Just have to watch how much you run it while staging. We actually didn't even take our own pit buggy. We would just be smart about running it or bum a tow from someone else.

Bringing this back up, finally got a machine shop to make the adapter nipple to thread into the 2020 cooler and take the 01-19 oil filter threads. They are going to cost me ~$30 each. I'm having a run of 10 made, and I believe at least 4 are spoken for. Please comment if you're still interested or need one. I figure I'm not the only one who's trying to do this. My intended use is for a sandwich plate to run an external oil cooler. I do not know if the diameter of the sealing surface on the 2020 cooler will accept the 01-19 filter.

I would be interested, if they ever get around to shipping the new oil cooler to me.
