They are rough enough to catch an .008" feeler gauge, can't find my dental pick,
Anyone got a clue to what caused this?
Water. Probably when the block was in storage. Hard oxide can be hard to spot after machining.

But that is not why you had water in the crankcase.
Cracked block at the bottom of the cylinder wallI have clearly not been inside a Duramax enough times. So what exactly am I looking at

I thought that was just oil or something, my bad. That sucks you cracked the block. Is that the one that had a broken crank?
