Everything I have read up to now indicated that the port on top of the filter housing is 1/2" NPT. However, I found an old post (2006) on the Diesel Place by TexChris saying 'the threads are 1/2" BSPT, same thread count as 1/2" NPT but no taper, they are straight cut'.

Does anyone know for sure if the port is NPT, or if it makes a difference when using a 1/2" NPT reducer?

And is the preference to use teflon tape, teflon paste sealer, or other sealer?

Temp Senor Reducer Followup

I ordered the Sunpro assorted reducer pack from Amazon but not knowing if it was going to show up anytime soon, I stopped by Ace Hardware (thx Chevyburnout1) and found a single reducer there. The cost was between 4 and five bucks. The label says "1/2 X 1/8 Pipe Bushing" with a part number on the tag of 4038477 and AB110A-DA.

I ended up using the Ace reducer because is was slightly shorter than the Sunpro. The Edge Temp Sensor package did not include any reducers. I did not have the tools to remove the plug so I went to a local shop and it was out in a half a second with an air driven tool. Hopefully I will have some results to post in a week or two on how will the Edge Insight monitor works and what kind of towing numbers I get with a mostly stock vehicle towing a 7,000 lb travel trailer.

Pictures:
1. Bottom view - Sunpro on the left, Edge Temp Sensor, Ace on the right.
2. Top view - Sunpro on the left, Edge Temp Sensor, Ace on the right.
3. Edge Temp Sensor finger tight screwed into the Ace reducer.
4. The original plug next to the Sunpro reducer.
5. The sensor installed.

So, is there a specific kit already put together for us diesel garage hero's, or do you have to find all the parts and make something work?
I like cool oil.
Look at some modern semi trucks. A western star i peeked at, had an oil cooling system almost as big as the radiator(not really, it was the size of the rad in my lbz tho), the bypass filter system is just stupid too.
Tells me that dedicated tow or performance rig should have that chit too, in an equal proportion.

ill probably get bored one day and play around with one of the two engine blocks i have sitting around and make one. i even have an amsoil oil filter bypass kit laying around i can build off of.

I ordered an autometer oil temp guage and it came with the 1/2 X 1/8 reducer bushing. A little tefflon tape and presto no leaks and a nice oil temp readout.

Edge Insight - Works good for monitoring temps

I was looking at adding a sensor to my insight using their (Edge) temp sensor. Anyone see anything wrong with that?

link to sensor: http://www.edgeproducts.com/product.php?pk=160&pvk=445

I was wondering if you or anyone else with an EDGE CS/CTS product has done this and how it worked out.
..............

Wondering too hmm. ...........

To answer my question and for a couple of others, the Edge Monitor with the oil temp sensor option works just fine. The whole setup is on the pricey side, but you do get a lot of features and the ability to monitor some PIDs that you could not do with traditional gauges.

The optional (i.e. extra cost) oil sensor fits without an issue in the spot recommended by Super Diesel. It does require a separate adapter as mention in the above posts. Response is fairly quick and the numbers appear realistic.

Below are a couple of pictures of the two of the screen display options. The 8 gauge layout lets you see all the temps side by side. (The actual numbers in the photos are not very meaningful because the truck was not fully warmed up. The purpose is to show some of what can be monitored and what to expect.)

So far I have only driven empty but I was surprised how hot the oil temp got on one drive. I did not have the camera to photograph the display, but doing mostly flat freeway driving with a few small gentle inclines, the oil temp went to 216 degrees and held steady. Coolant was 197. This is crusing at 68 mph with a mostly stock truck, the only mod being an AFE mouthpiece. Outside air temp was just over 100. That oil temp was not far from the 220 posted elsewhere to not exceed. It will be interesting to see how high it gets when I tow my trailer in the next couple of days.

TFT-Trans Fluid Temp; ECT-Engine Coolant Temp; EOT-Engine Oil Temp; EGT-Exhaust Gas Temp: EOP-Engine Oil Pressure

What im planning on doing is wiring in an oil temp sensor into the trans fluid temp circuit on a little toggle switch.....

No extra wiring into the cab, no extra gauge to mount, and its stealth. Just flip the toggle switch to momentarily turn your factory trans temp gauge into an oil temp gauge!

I would definitely be interested in reading about this operation. Could it be logged then?

Are you guys putting in oil temp and oil pressure gauges or just a temp gauge and you are using EFI to log the oil pressure?

The oil pressure gauge on the dash is accurate. And if you log oil pressure on the databus with EFILive, its accurate to the 1 psi. (03+ trucks only)

No need for an aftermarket oil pressure gauge.

Curious to know how you have tested the accuracy?

Not sure if you guys care but I did a 1/4 mile pass with no oil cooler and the results are as follows

Oil temp 113.6f
Water temp 155.4f
Egt 1527f
Total Boost 79.8 psi
Drive pres 115.3 psi
Max mph 129.8
Max distance 1398'
Boost 1 51.4 psi

I've used aftermarket gauges and had different results? The gauges on the truck IMO are poor at best I've calibrated them against test equipment at my work and thought " ya it's close" how have you tested it??

Oil temp and water temp dont make sense?

I am with Ben on the oil pressure readings. Now that I have an Insight, oil pressure is a PID I selected, and the oem gauge is spot on, all the way from 14psi-75psi that I have seen.
