Great thread

More guys getting into monitoring will surely help also

I posted about this thing quite a few years ago but never purchased one but though it may be a valuable asset to monitoring oil temp and much more
http://www.intellistick.com/

Because I threw my email on the site asking about info on they phoned me a while back and asked if I was interested in one..... I asked if I bougt a bunch would I get a deal and they said sure. However I never did buy one:(

Ok. Here we go again. Just got back from a test to Genessee pass. It was 82*F for out side temps till I go to Genessee which was 71*F (higher than the past on both). I was running unloaded again and kept EGT temps around 1300-1450 most the time. Ran pretty good up there but NOT a cannon ball run. No cooler hooked up, no chiller on the intake (keeping it fair for past tests). I WAS running with A/C again though (it's making a big difference even in town when running it). ECT were at 195*F for the duration of the climb and trans temps hovered between 190-195*F for most the trip too. By the time I got to the C470 exit I was sitting at 193*F on the oil temps (BIG difference from before) and pressures were 30psi at 2K RPM at the MAIN JOURNALS (not the dash mounted oil pressure gauge), and at the Genesse turn off I was at a max oil temp of 211*F after I turned around (208*F at the exit), and pressures were 27psi at 2K at the journals. This is quite a bit of difference from the runs before with the conventional oil at lower ambient temps. Pretty darn good results for running without a cooler on a 82*F day if you ask me compared to what I was getting. This is still running with the Schaeffer 9000 5W-40 oil. This is my findings as unscientific as they may be but on the street and DD is where it counts for me. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Haven't put any in the LLY yet to back it up yet, but it's coming. We've been monitoring the LLY with conventional Delvac 1300 for a little while now and have a good base on standard running temps to compare the finding to when we do the Schaeffer test in it. Hopefully we can put this oil to oil temp comparison to bed.

Glad to hear some very detailed results. My torque converter and oil temp sender should be here soon so I'm hoping to run some of the same tests up through Eisenhower by the end of the month.

I'll be going up towards Kremling for some fishing (by Gore pass) soon Dustin. My brother says there's not much snow pack to speak of (didn't see much up there when I was riding with John K. during the DPC). I'll have the camper on. Let me know if you need some help or anything. I would like to get some help with input on this and some more solid findings.

Me Josh? If so, remember, I've got a transducer to show pressure at the main journals (#1 namely). This is the problem journal along with #2. I'm not considering the dash gauge at this point. But for the records it displays about 7-8 psi higher there. Also remember that I have opened my oil sqirters to flow almost twice (from .063 to .085) and the main bearings I'm running are +001 over size, plus I'm running a oil purifier with a .045 bleed off and a restrictorless -6AN line to the GT4202. LOTS of places to reduce my oil pressure.

If I did it again, I would run the oil sqirters at about .070-.074 max knowing what I know now.

I'm not convinced they need twice the flow if the oil is being kept cooler in the first place. However, twice the flow IS twice as good, no? I guess it doesn't really matter, however it does reduce the oil pressure that much more. I guess that's the way I would do it if I did it again. It's a personal thing I suppose and no science to it. In the end, every one has to do what they feel warm and fuzzy with. :D

Same here. Kremmling is first on the list, and unfortunately my truck is whats holding up the trip lol. It should be back on the road next weekend though if things go well. Oil temp sender should be in any day. Dunno if I will install an oil pressure gauge but if I can round up one for a decent price then I will.

I don't have and issues with relying on the stock pressure sensor Dustin. We know there dropping some on the 01-02s, but your's should have the pressure sensor over the oil filter housing further back on the block on the "from oil filter side" instead of the "before oil filter side" like mine. Your pressures should be closer to actual at the journals. Just watch those oil temps up over the pass and keep them from biting back.

Sweet sounds good. Maybe next weekend I'll hot rod it up the mountain to Estes Park just to see where the temps climb. I'll update ya when the time comes. I'm going to stick with running my regular Rotella this oil change to get a baseline.

Well took the trailer out to my buddy who works at discount tire. needed to put tires on it before our trip next week and get the tires rotated and balanced on the limo. did all stop and go on the way out there (15 miles to the shop from my house) as i took side streets the whole way cause the tires on the trailer were junk (didnt trust them on the highway). drove pretty easy the whole time and wasnt doin race car starts or anything, jsut easy driving. Outside temp was 106*, a/c on, running tow/haul. oil temps peaked at 220* due to the fan shutting off once on the way out but it soon kicked right back on and never kicked back off. With the fan on, temps wouldnt move above 210. Mind you, this is all stop and go in traffic lights going no faster than 50mph and you could watch the temp drop as i idled at stop lights.

on the way back i played a little harder and hit the highway. onto the on ramp i was about 3/4+ throttle trying to pick a place in line since everyone wanted to be dicks and not let me in (i still won lol). temps hit 215* after. Did another almost WOT run to get around a trucker and see how she pulled from 50 to 75mph. temps jumped to 230* and stayed, pressure was at 50psi at 1800 rpm (stock gauge). got back out of it and slowed and did another pull up a little overpass at WOT from 50 to 80 this time. temps stayed at 230* and pressure stayed the same. jumped straight off to my turn off and sat at the light for at most 1 min. temps were already falling. they were about 220* by the time i turned and got back into it again, pressure climed some to about 55psi. ran it hard from 10mph to 60mph and got out of it due to traffic coming. temp was back at 230 and stayed by about 50mph, pressure still at 50psi. A/c on, Fan on the whole time, 106* outside temp, and all on the same big tow tune. ECT was constant at 200* the whole drive. Now, the coolant temp gauge on my truck is slow reacting as well. When i had my edge on the truck looooong ago, i could monitor ECT and watch it hit 225* by the time the gauge needle would finally creep to 205/210* pulling a long hill loaded. So i personally dont trust the ECT gauge in our trucks as "extremely accurate" ways to measure what we are doing but it does a decent job for 99% of what i do.

Now i have no doubt ill see higher than 230 pullin a hill loaded but i was surprised i didnt see higher for as hard as i was pushing it. trailer is around 7200lbs. makes me feel a bit more comfortable goin next weekend. This is also on a fresh oil change to Rotella T6 syn oil.

Well just my luck my oil temp gauge showed up a DAY AFTER I had to tow this back home from Denver. Oh well hopefully we'll get it on this weekend.

Wasn't my biggest load but I haven't driven the truck in four months so I was pulling 80+mph on the way back. Had to see how a quick I could pull a few of those hills on I-25 :thumb: :woott: Breaking the transmission in right!
