Are any of you that are planning on fitting an L5P oil cooler on worried that the added extra heat will just raise and possibly overheat the coolant? Or you have enough capacity already and its just away of moving the heat in the oil over to the coolant?

I already feel that’s true. I feel GM cooling system is already borderline not large enough out here at or barely above stock hp. The lml seems to handle it better but oil temps still suck big time. The l5p got better at oil temps.

I’ve add a whole bunch of added cooling capacity but this summer will be the true test

Has anyone had their oil tested after the oil temps were 300* pulling a grade?



I have, was a-ok but only hit 280*. Have to find my test sheet.

Lots of guys in the ls world of sand and off road cars that have been hitting 260-300* and testing ok. Only full syn though

I got my 2020 oil cooler and coolant adapter elbow this afternoon. I found out they use a different oil filter than the standard filter they have used since 2001. It appears to take the same filter the Silverado has used since around 2016 according to the application data on Wix’s website. I am just guessing at the filter based on dimension I can measure on the housing. Anyway, here is a picture of the new L5P cooler next to the old L5P cooler which as you can see in previously posted pictures is larger than the LML and earlier coolers.

Also, if you do order the new stuff, you will need the gasket that goes between the elbow and the cooler. The part number for that is 12676826.

A little more info, I counted the plates on the early and late L5P coolers I have and asked James to count the plates in his LB7 cooler (as far as I know this never changed until the first L5P). The LB7 was 10 plates, early L5P had 14, and the late L5P had 20 plates. So the new cooler has double the oil cooling capacity.

What’s the PN of the oil cooler? Is it direct fit for 01? Approximate costs?

Well now I’m hopeful for direct fit again

If it is direct fit my tow rig will get one. My built motor LLY just got a brand new LML cooler since when I built my motor I didn't know about the L5P cooler (December 2017/Jan 2018).

Josh is going to see if he can get another. Him and i ran across a few different ideas to try as far as making my sandwich adapter work. if everything bolts on as it should, im going to try running it without the external cooler first. if temps are still not great, ill make an adapter plate and get my cooler hooked back up. "should" bolt on. curious if the coolant tube into the front will be an issue or the oil ports to the block or even the 90* angle to the mid plate is the same. then where to hook my oil temp sender up at.

I confirmed with my dealer, parts are available and MUCH cheaper than a 01-16 cooler.

yeah, but more than the 17-19 coolers even before the elbow and we know the 17-19 is bolt and go with about 50% more cooling

It’s gonna cost me ~$240 for the cooler, elbow, and gasket. I personally don’t include an oil filter because I’ll do it when the truck needs an oil change.
