I was just told that the 17's will no longer have an Allison. What in the hell is GM thinking, I'm one step away from a new Ram now...

Anyone else been told this? I really hope my source is wrong on this one...

Depends . What if they put something better than an Allison in them . Maybe an 8 speed of some sort . I'm in the process of purchasing a new truck . I may have to hold off and continue to stack paper so I can buy a 17 at the end of next year . After all hasn't there been some scuttle butt about major changes on the 17s .

I am still a fan of the 5 speeds over the 6 speeds other then the tap shift. I don't see the benefits of the 8 speed.

The owner of my local dealer. He hasnt been wrong yet, I hope he is this time though...

I think he is mistaken. Dealers hear about this type of stuff about 2 minutes before the rest of the public does.

Contrary to popular belief, dealers are NOT privy to any special GM insider information or proprietary knowledge.

The Allison will be here in 2017 (model year, probably late Q2 2016 calendar year). Relax.

As much as I hate Fords stock to stock the latest transmission they run seems to be much nicer to drive than the allison is.

I know once you tune, put the power to both, the tables turn but stock to stock that's my thoughts. I put alot of miles on both platforms and this seems to be the feeling I get from alot of other guys as well. It wouldn't surprise me if gm did something different.

I agree, I like how the Ford transmissions operate now.. I really wish gm would come out with a new one or at least new programing..

Doubt if GM tries something else. They only have an 8L90 and it will not hold the TQ of the Duramax.

Well, since GM is no longer using ALLISON TCM'S, then I would take a wild guess and say they are also using different programming now as well.

The fact that they quit using the Allison TCM is what has me concerned. I keep hearing its going to have an 8 speed, I sure hope its not the 8l90 with torque management used to keep it alive behind the torque of a duramax...

They decided to stay in house with there own controller since they have been writing the software to go into the ALLISON controller. So why not stay in house and not outsource even more of the truck?

GM is going to need the Duramax to produce at least 825ft lbs of torque and tow around 30,000lbs to be competitive (on paper) with Ram/Ford.

Show me an 8L90 that will hold 825ft lbs while towing 30k lbs and Ill show you a Duramax that can fly. :)

Seriously, Ill bet you guys a million dollars that the Allison is not going anywhere.

So GM now uses a different controller for the Allison, so what. Car mfg's switch/update controllers for all sorts of different reasons.

The A40/A50 4th gen Allison controller is 10 years old and was/is at the end of its life-cycle and needed to be replaced to add additional/future features with faster processing and more advanved logic. The replacement is the all-new Allison A61 5th gen controller. GM probably didnt want to pay Allison to write them all new code for the A61 and license the A61 for use in the GM pickup trucks.

At the same time the 4th gen A40/A50 was at its end-of-lifecycle, GM released a brand new (and very capable) transmission controller for the 8L90.

The bean counters did the math, and it obviously was cheaper/made more sense to use the new T87 for the Allison as the replacement for the A40/A50 in the pickup trucks, rather than use the new A61. Less hardware to support/stock (8L90 and Allison now use the same computer), less connectors to supply for wiring harnesses, and probabaly less work in the software/calibration department because GM can do it all in-house and only one team is needed (the "T87 team").

So, in summary, switching to the T87 on the Allison doesnt mean jack shit. :thumb:
