I guess the whole reason for this thread has to do with more with an attitude than a chemical.
Seems there are some chemicals that are "worthy" to the old-schoolers, but others are disgusting and not really "diesel".
I'm sure Preston or Dockboy can correct me, but here is what I understand (from an Old-School perspective):
Acceptable Drugs:
Ether
Oxygenating agents mixed in fuel
Unacceptable drugs:
Synthetic diesel (it's actually just pure #2 diesel)
CNG
Water + methanol
Nitrous
Propane
European racing diesel fuel
I apologize to the few Dodge guys who don't agree with this philosophy. Seems I painted with too broad of a brush. Guys like John Robinson are true gearheads who are looking for ways to make their cars and trucks faster, not just looking at ways to discredit anyone who doesn't use the "right" drugs.
The original diesel fuel was peanut oil, so the "old-old-school" would say petroleum products aren't "diesel fuel". Nobody would buy into that, so why would anyone proclaim they own the "official list" of "true diesel fuels"?
Banks, Stuckey, Californians, Common Rail racers, etc, are routinely slammed on the internet by the "old-school" guys. Banks is evil because they use nitrous, and it's claimed they run exotic fuels and CNG (which is probably not true). Stuckey is slammed because they use nitrous. Californians because... uh... they are from California. Common Rail racers because they don't smoke as much as "real diesels".
This is only significant because some diesel organizations buy into it, both publically, and in their rulebooks. I say "horse poop". They should spend their energy on their racing instead of mounting a PR campaign against those who run different setups.
Make no mistake, I'm a GM guy, so I write from that prospective. That pisses folk off, but that's in my job description. When issues come up that affect Duramax racers, I'm going to side with the Dmaxers. But there is no "balance" yet. The old-schoolers run the show as far as organized competition goes so far. But in the long run, they will have to accomodate newer trucks or get left in the dust.
