Congrats on the new hoe!

I know brand isn't everything, but I don't much care for Doosan. IMO just an other cheap throw away machine. From a business stand point there are plenty of reasons to buy one though. So this isn't a dig.

Yeah I don't get too concerned with color but our DX180 would out dig our Case CX160 all day in eco mode and the Case was in high. The Doosan had a bigger bucket and still handled it fine. I demoed a new Deere and Case before we went with our first Doosan (DX180) and didn't look back.

In December I sat in and ran a Cat 336E for a little bit and really wasn't impressed by it or the cab, and the hyd coupler kept unlocking and beeping. Our Cat rep was pissed when he found out we bought 2 new Doosans and 3 Bobcats this year and didn't call him at all. But I like em a lot. They have come a long way since Daewoo.

Looking forward to you guys getting it all resolved then. It's absolutely ridiculous to go and sue someone over rocks especially since they were on your grandpas field. Sounds like a dick of a neighbor. Is he making this a long drawn out ordeal?

Yeah it's irritating to the point that I don't like talking about it because of how stupid it is....It's been over a year and a half of crap so far over 40 ton worth of rock... when we go through 3000-4000 ton per year. The boulders were out of his field and placed along the tree line so apparently they were his property since it was near his property?.... funny thing is he asked my grandpa and his friend to move them a couple years ago and got mad when he wouldn't since there wasn't anything wrong with them or their location. Well after awhile they run out of space along the tree line and it needs cleaned up after so many years. They have been picking rocks since it was turned into a field in 1860 when my Great great great grandpa homesteaded it. But only now that we picked them it's an issue.

Add to that my grandpa has stage IV cancer and dealing with it or having it in the back of our heads is the last thing we want to do.

Sorry for the vent but trying to make money that way is just dead wrong and even though I have never met the guy or have no idea what he looks like or even drives I really hope one day he is ashamed of himself.

People fight over rocks everyday. Our business has been building boulder walls and limestone/Lannon stone for over 30yrs, and we have had a few people try some shady stuff to make a quick buck. Lucky for us, none have worked. Hope you guys get it straightened out soon to. The hoe looks nice. What thumb are you putting on it?
Around here, boulders have really fallen away, and limestone has takin over. Which is fine with me, way cleaner, level lines, correct set backs, and rows stay clean.
Many people don't understand that boulder rows are not suppose to intersect with the next row. But I'm picky when it comes to that.

Yeah it's not the first time. Most of the time people call us to get rid of them because they are a nuisance. I've still had cops show up when loading out my own rocks from a jobsite. It's alright though. Means people are watching.

We have Limestone here but it a lot more expensive. My 15* setbacks (10* for reinforced walls) are fine with glacial boulders but you have to have a knack for stacking rocks. I can look at most walls around here and tell you exactly who build it and how structurally sound it is onless it totally looks like crap then anyone could have built it.

With field boulders you're not supposed to do rows because that creates failure planes. I think it looks like crap too so I always do a mosaic unless its under 4' and the owner requests rows and global stability isn't a concern.

As for thumb the company runs custom order dual motor Towtem Grapples that are built to my spec.

The DX235 is getting a 72" Grapple, The DX180 has a 60" grapple that's two years old.... and the DX85 is getting a 50" grapple.

Here's a smaller 10' wall I did around Indian burial grounds along the Minnesota River this fall

Sorry to hear your grandpa has cancer man, didn't mean to ask something that would strike a nerve.

With that said every time I see one your walls, it makes me want to put a small one (with much smaller rocks obviously) outside of my house for a flower bed or something for the wife :roflmao:

Yeah I agree with ya, i can look at other walls and can tell who built them for the most part. Lol.
On a side note, looking at the pic you posted? What set back do you claim that is? What's it back filled with? Any felt behind for run off? And yes what I was referring to as rows, if you take a level line, should be consistent and to where grade allows. Like on your top row, from left to right. That's where I get picky so there no dip in the wall and stays level. No cutting your wall at all.i know how hard it is to build them and alot of times, hard to have enough stone to play with on site. Wish more people around here knew how to build a wall like you or I. We get cut on price alot, but you get what u pay for.
90% of our walls are now limestone. Not by choice, just the way the customers have turned. 80% of our business as a whole is retaining walls and patios. Definitely enjoy it. Between that and building shorelines and rip rap, winter can't leave fast enough. Lol. Although this winter has been crazy and keeping all our trucks and cats working removing snow.
I'm not into stacking rocks, and intermixing small rocks with large rocks and filling gaps with smaller rocks. Would be cool to sit down and share job pics tho and bs some. Always fun to talk to fellow builders.
Your trucks are looking killer as usual, nice work. Super jealous of how clean you keep them.

Interesting....maybe the specs are different for limestone, but if I built any of my walls in rows I would have to take them down and start over if our engineer saw them. For walls (under 4') I can really do whatever I want though. I think rows should only be for modular (SRW) walls personally. Depends what kind of rock you are using though.

That wall I pictured is between 10 and 13* setback, I had to stack it that way and could not disturb the ground behind because of the Indian burial grounds there. But I also had to mind the BFW because the walkouts for houses are very close to the wall. The State Archeologist was out to the site many times to check. All of our walls have 8oz filter fabric behind them and are backfilled with select grade sand, sometimes 1 1/2" clear if specked that way...and packed with a jumping jack.

Looking good. I bet it's awesome not having to wear sun glasses while your sitting in those all day. When do you guys normally start back up, around April or so?

Very nice. Good to hear. It's amazing how many companies don't use fabric or even pack while they backfill. I've watched it hundreds of time around here.

Tint looks awesome. Goin to be a nice rig forsure.

It is nice, sometimes I still wear my sunglasses believe it or not. I have really sensitive eyes though and have a tint prescription for my trucks so when I get pulled over I get to tell the officer to pound sand.

Thanks, and we offer a warranty on our walls so they need to stay standing. :)

I've had 2 fail in 6 years, one was because the sub soils failed because the company that does our compaction testing said it was fine but it really wasn't

The other one failed because I wasn't done building it yet and we got 5" of rain overnight.... large slope behind the wall and all the water came down the hill and blew a 40' section of it out.

Stuff happens though.

Tinted excavator = baller!

It's funny, I used to have a bunch of people approach my excavator if I was working in a development but now that they can't see me most stay away.

Between that and me not having to squint all day I am doing it on everything now.

I thought these were a real pain in the ass to change because the lights were soldered in there, is that not the case?

Nope, I ordered a 5M long led strip on ebay. You only have to solder once, no resistors or anything. Run it around the cluster and cut it to length. Every 3 leds you can cut it.... don't throw the extra away either because you can just solder new leads on and keep going!

x2, are you using ben's method with the halo's?

LED strip :thumb:

Obviously for our trucks you need to start and go around the trans gauge as well. It's not too bad though.

Also besides the soldering joint, I just left the old bulbs in place.

Blue Needles are from Ebay, you can get them in a bunch of colors.

think it would be possible for me to do red white and blue(red on left, white in middle, blue on right) or would the colors interfere with one another too much?

I think you could easily do it. I'd try it but my red leds haven't shown up yet. I would just get some aluminum tape and build a shield between each gauge. Depends how you aim the strips as well. If you did it like mine I don't see it being an issue.

I messed around with mine more. Took the blue out, then took the backing off so it's pure white on my spare overlay.. now I am making 3 led loops so the gauge needles light up a crisp blue.

The rpm doesn't have a blue loop around it yet.

I like this way better.
