I'm hoping 450-500 will get me up on top and still be on the upside of the torque curve when the boost comes off. I don't think you can utilize big hp like you can with gas because of rpm limitations, at some point you run out of prop.
Innovation settled with 550 hp and burned a few pistons getting the tune right. As you know a boat is more like a constant uphill tow

The 500hp range should work just fine for you.
When myself and a buddy were looking at doing the repower we figured on 2200-2400 rpm range at cruising. Once plane'd out the hp/tq required should drop down quite a bit but getting it to that point is where it will work the hardest at higher rpm right? Kind of like towing a big trailer from a dead stop to highway speed. All depends how fast you can get it to pop out of the water. Our biggest concern was how to keep the oil cool. I would suggest installing an oil temp gauge to monitor it.

You might want to consider calling SOCAL, and see if he can do a custom cam for you. Do some port work on the heads, and move your power band up. That way you can limit your bottom end torque(where rods tend to get shortened), and still get your HP goals up top where you need it.

He mentioned a while back that he had a good cam for this set up, at the time I had planned on running them all stock for a short time to get a baseline on egt 's and to make up some lost time. But now I'm pulling the heads to get machined for LBZ injectors, so now I have time to go into the short blocks. I still believe I can get what I need without better rods and pistons. I guess time will tell.

Most likely cruise around 2600-2800 with WOT at 3200

Oh yes, imo I'd stick with 450hp or less. Just my two cents.

Really wanted to run stock LML HP levels to start with and see how things go.
Reliability is top priority, speed and range kind of go together.
We're the same way down here in the summer the gulf is generally slick enough to run as fast as you can. I have an old school 40 scarab I restored a few years ago, it has a race fairing instead of a windshield and we used to run it out for quick box of red snapper opening morning, but the wind at 65-70 bothered some people, I could never get enough.
As far as the d max goes, in a marine set up any significant power increase would call for built short blocks, which is fine but I'd like to see it run stock first

Another local long range rig.
Midnight Express hull, scarab top cap, pursuit console, total mutt boat running 440 yanmars detuned to 380hp ( to keep to bravo xr's alive). Cruises around 45-50 and gets 4 mpg.

Its crazy how many older riggs are being refit now, I just finished a contender fish around, took it completely apart and made her new again. It seems the high price tags of the new riggs over 35' seems to be pushing people in this dirdction. The fisharound has about 200k in the refit but a new (if contender still built them) one outfitted like this one would push 300k...

I really like what you are doing with that CC. Keep us posted of how it all comes together...:thumb:
