I personally hate cast pistons. Yes you can run them tighter and they can be very strong, but if you drop a valve with a forging you beat the hell out of the piston, with a cast piston it turns into a grenade:eek:

Think of cast as glass and forged as rubbermade;)

well other then tellin me not to do it, would you mind telling me why?

Some people are scared of running the looser piston to wall clearence required for forged. I belive Guy said Mahl pistons are 1/2 way between other forged and cast as far as clearence. Perhaps he may chime in.

that and the lack of the top ring not be hardened or wht ever its called. theres just not enough data from any one doing daily driveing with them to tell how they will perform I was very very close to going with them. but wound up with cast cut/coated lb7 we will se how they hold up. Hopefully for a long long time :)

so go forged then, thanks for the heads up. is the 16:1 comprestion ratio fine tho?

IMO I would go with Mahl pistons. Your best bet is to call up Guy and get his oppinion. He has by far more knowledge with that stuff than anyone I can think of.

16:1 should be fine IMO, I will go less on my motor, but my future plans involve tripple digit boost:eek::angel:

last time i talked to guy he had 20k+ on his forged pistons as a d/d but he still cant say how long they will go take that for what its worth but i would still call Guy he will discuss all of your options and not try to force anything on you .

Pistons

I run the Arias piston and I can't figure out why everyone is scared of a little clearance. I guess you must know at operating temp the clearance is not that loose. You need some room for things to move, They will move(grow) weather you want them to or not. Many factory performance cars came with forged pistons stock. Mine will never get high miles on it as its just a toy but I can assure anyone it will get beat on as hard as anyone's. It will get driven hard, raced hard, and pulled hard. I guess to eash his own but sometimes you have to try different things to get ahead of the game.

Loose fit. They grew more with heat. Just for the record if your wanting 200k out of your truck you would want a cast factory type piston for your build. If its a performance motor build I personaly would go with a forged piston and not take a chance. Cast pistons are more brittle than a forged and not as forgiving when things go bad. Just my thoughts for what its worth. Thanks Jeff

see thats where i come to a stop. i would love for my truck to last as long as it can, like 200K plus but i also want the best to go into my build and i dont want to worry about something going wrong becuase i wanted to save myself a few bucks. so if i go with Mahle i should be fine right? my truck will get abused just as much as its daily driven.

I too am still learning but I will tell you this-Guy is a wealth of info and so is Pat. The price difference of what your wanting in the engine is kinda what we wanted but it all boiled down to the fact with the 7.1 kit it was actually cheaper and alot better quality then piecing it together. We did the 7.1 kit from Guy, stage 2 heads, cam, studs, billet injector hold downs, billet main caps and the GT4202r and my customer is completely satisfied. It is like taking off in a jet. Haven't got any times yet or dyno numbers but we are working on it.

Can't speak to longevity of the forged pistons, IIRC Guy hammered the snot outta his and they never broke.

They make a little noise when cold and need some time to heat up, the forged pistons from Mahle are not as loose as others they are a compromise in forged terms.

I believe the forged Mahle pistons in my current build called for .005" piston-to-wall clearance (.0025" a side). Not sure if that is the top/bottom of the tolerance.

Why are the Mahle considered a "compromise"? Different Alloy or Heat Treat?

Sorry for the OT
