After seeing all that, I'll definitely get the heads surfaced if just to have them cleaned!

Well, this ordeal is almost over...
Due to the damages I found on this used engine I will be granted a full refund. While my time won't be recovered (monetarily speaking) I gained more than I lost. I feel like this was an invaluable experience and I am thankful that there was a reason for me to receive a refund
:thumb:

I got the junkyard dog back together today (I had two pistons out this morning) and it will be picked up by the seller either tomorrow night or Wednesday morning.

With my refund I think I'm gonna be sending my block to SoCal for some massaging and to balance the rotating assembly, I've got a parts list all lined out with a buddy of mine and we've made a goal to stay under 10k for the whole thing (including a new turbo ;) )

I'll be assembling it
:woott:

I gotta give a huge shout out to:
SoCal diesel for having a torque spec chart on every single bolt on a d-max engine
DuramaxDiesels for, well for being awesome
The members here...you guys are always so helpful (all of you!) and over the years there has been so much technical data, insightful info and just plain ol good comradory that make this site great.
And a personal thanks
Tark (DetailsUnlimited) for all his help and motivation
McRat- for some great write ups! I used the valve lash tutorial today and learned something!
Lol
And my wife, for always seeing the best in me, even when I feel like a total screw up. Putting up with the messes I make and always believing in me

You'll be assembling the short block or Socal will do that and you'll do the rest? Curious to see what's on your parts list as well...

Good to hear it has worked out was looking like you were having a hell of a time.
BTW bad timing for me and them injectors but we should still get together for a beer some time.:thumb:

Pretty sure I'll assemble the shortblock myself...saves money and time that way

Parts list is pretty standard for a D-max build around here...my build is ever changing so it's hard to say what it will wind up being
For now it's carrillos, Clevite, ARP, stock heads and cam and Mahle race cast. If I get a bump in funds I'll get the block machined for the seal ring, go with an AF cam, ovals and stg 1 heads.

Good deal Coco. Glad it's gonna work out for the best...

10-4. Glad it seems to be working out bud! :thumb:

Wow that is good news Coco!
Thanks guys!
Yeah, that engine was turning into a nightmare, lesson learned
So much for a "grade A motor"

No worries on those injectors, without the "low mile" injectors I was planning to have from the donor engine I'm gonna need those 60's anyways.
Everything happens for a reason, right?
!
Just tell me when, I think I left ya my # in a PM. Anytime you're around the eastside give me a hollar, or maybe we can meet up in the middle someday and talk shop :thumb:

Now all I need to do is get my refund and it's on like donkey kong!

They balance the rotating assembly and send the crank, rods and pistons all together or balance it and disassemble?

What would they charge to machine and assemble the short block
Don't hold this quote too firm cuz I'm just trying to remember off the top of my head
Basic disassembly cleaning, hot tank and machining, crank check, new cam bearings installed and rotating assembly balanced was something like 2100-2300...?

Shortblock assembly added like $1000 IIRC, give or take. I wanna say to have a complete shortblock shipped back to me was $3500. MINUS THE PARTS OF CORSE!!!
I can't read the quotes they sent to my email cuz they use adobe format and it would seem like my apple devise(s) aren't compatible, least I can't get the app to download...
So I have to remember from our conversation what they said...

IIRC, They balance it on a separate machine and have to disassemble it to install the parts anyways, I'd imagine they'd leave the pistons and rods connected tho

Interesting note
I was told they can balance the rotating assembly if you sent them just one piston? Which seems weird but that's what I was told.

Sounds pricy

Really doesn't seem to bad for the cleaning and machining, but for assembly it seemed a little much... And if you decide to have them assemble it you gotta get in line, even a shortblock is a several week wait.

After going through the used engine I just tore down and put back together, I see no reason for me to pay and wait for SoCal to do it!

I had two pistons out of that engine yesterday morning at 10am, it was complete right down to the EGR and engine cover bolt by 8pm
:)

I even took the time and learned how to set the valve lash!

You would need to static balance your pistons first. Weigh them all pick the lightest one and make the rest weigh the same. The same is done with the rods only they are done end for end where each end of each rod are made to weigh the same. Once all the individual parts rods, pins and pistons with fitted rings are matched they use the weight of one rod and piston assembly to make up bob weights used on the crank with balancer and fly wheel or flex plate to dynamically balance the crank.
