I read that thread and found it interesting that Cole is using some very clever wording about his stroker kit, sounding like it's actually better than stock.

When you stroke an engine by offset grinding the rod journals, you must remove metal from the crank at the same rate you want the stroke to increase.

So if your journal is 2.5" in diameter, and you want to add 0.300" stroke to it, you have the grind the journals down .300". That's 30% LESS rod journal material as well as 13% less bearing area. If my math is right.

Exactly how much stronger does that make it? None. It makes it far weaker. Even if that's not the area the cranks are breaking at, reducing the rod journals makes the crankshaft flex more. 30% more.

Not the road I'd go down to solve breakage problems, or even use on an engine with breakage issues.

Whether the SoCal stroker is the cat's meow or not, trusting someone's opinion on it who thinks cutting that much off the journals is a clever solution is silly.

Normally they give points after they tell you to cool it and don't.

I wonder if they gave Diesel Tech points for calling LBZ DMAX "dumb"?

Usually they won't. I'm not sure I've ever witnessed Diesel Tech get hassled for calling anyone stupid, yet it's in any thread where someone disagrees with him and he can't come up with an answer:

GMengineer - "Steve, I think our engines don't have a turbo RPM sensor."

DieselTech - "I and my team of engineers worked extensively with Garrett, Isuzu, and GM developing that RPM sensor. It was all my invention."

GMengineer - "Uh, I just looked at the wiring diagram. That's a vane position sensor."

Diesel Tech - "That's because you aren't reading the wiring diagram right. You should go read some books on it. Any smart person would know that is an RPM sensor."

When the staff asks him what's up, he says "I didn't actually call him stupid", and they let him off.

However, if the member replies, "No, it's YOU who are too dumb to read a schematic, that is indeed a vane position sensor", then that member usually gets a few days off, even though he was right all along.

Believe it or not, that is based on a true incident.

stroker cranks

Sorry Pat but I don't agree on some stuff said about the offset stroke cranks. They can indeed make them stronger if done correct. They can put a larger radi in the crank and chamfer the bearing and make it stronger. Every crank will flex and bend under power. That is were a smaller bearing will help and slow the bearing speed down. With that as you know there will be less oiling issues. Is his crank stronger than SoCal? I doubt it. I have not seen Guys cranks but i'd bet they have atleast a .125 radi from the bearing surface to the cheek of the crank. Jeff

Narrowing the bearings in a turbocharged or supercharged application is not normally considered a good thing. The narrower bearing is more likely to "hammer" out of shape.

Sorry about the tech content and Off Topic discussion.;)
