Texas!!!
I just hauled a load with my truck last weekend. It was a 35' dual tandem gooseneck weighing 25k gross (truck and trailer), and I was seeing coolant temps between 190 and 225 and oil temps from 230 to 260. Most of the time it was around 200 and 240, but the longer grades (keep in mind this is relatively flat Texas) would push them up to the high end. I'm considering a new fan clutch and auxiliary oil cooler. Don't haul much, but when I do, I don't want to worry about cooking a piston or bearing. On the really long grades that got the oil temps up there, I was seeing as low as 26 psi oil pressure at 2k rpm. That can't be good for the motor.

My next step will be the hayden 2886 clutch. I just didnt have time to order or install it before the trip this weekend.

i would look at an oil cooler before the fan clutch. its the more expensive of the two and will make the greater difference in temp.

How big of a cooler should it at least to control the temps? After seeing threads popping up about oil temps, it's starting to make me realize how hot my oil is from the 6+ hours of constant towing. I would be using the setrab cooler, can't beat their quality.

Setrab 925 is ~60kbtu same thing they use for transmission cooler up grade. I'm at 60k (twin 30k coolers)with my setup just up to pair of spal 11" 1600cfm fans. They're not cheap at ~200.00 each

yes but that cooler in the link paired with a spal fan would be a great setup IMHO

EDIT: if the scoop and fan on my truck dont help my temp issues come our 4th of july trip, i will be looking into doing that cooler setup for oil and selling the killer bee cooler i have. where i have to put it is less than ideal. it works much better in the GMC location it was designed for.

Agreed.. taking ~550.00 for the setup though.. the basic derale setup imo would do well for a weekend hauler take the remaining ~200.00 for lines and a either remote mount filter or a sandwich adapter from mishimoto

For continuous hauling or (light hauling with stupid hp)like me definitely recommend the spal fans... Holly shit do they move air!! I'm running 8ga wire and relay on each

Fwiw to the OP I'm at ~400rwhp and tow upwards of a 29,000lb trailer for a living

This is a long but very good read.

I had the same problems as you and after I installed my oil temp gauge and towed for the first time I couldn't believe it.
Oil temps 283 :(:(
coolant temp 240 :(:(
oil pressure 25 :(:confused::(:confused:
After the oil cooler my temps stay in check.
Same hill same load close to same temps.
Oil temp 244
Coolant temp 210
Oil pressure 37

well, after a long trip to the dunes I have a little data to go off of. I pulled a decent hill in 5th at 80 MPH while it was 92 degrees out. Probably not my smartest moment. It was a short hill, but pretty steep. By the time I hit the top my oil temp was 267 and coolant temp was 232. On the way back, The pass I climb varies from 5-7 percent grade. Not sure how many miles, but I had my Girl friend video it for me and It was a 4 minute video at 70 MPH. EGT's were in check around 1150. Coolant temp was 222 at the top but my oil temp was a crazy 267 again. I found the difference in oil temp to coolant temp a little large. Looks like an oil cooler is in my future. What oil temps are acceptable? It hasnt ran above 260 very long on either climb.

I dont like much more then 20° over coolant temps. I'd backout at 230° with oem pistons.. personal preference, as ive killed two sets of OEM pistons with 400hp or less .
The mahle race cast ill let got to 250° ive hit 240° thus far with mahle race cast

Back out at 260* oil temps. Running above that isn't good for oil pressure nor the oil it's self (unless your running a synthetic).

Based on the temps you see, the cooler suggested will knock temps down quite a bit and keep things in check. 222* coolant is still a decent temp and cooler oil will help knock that down too.

240° oil temp is enough to drop pressure below oem recommend ranges.. with stock oil pump. Which is 18@ idle and 42@1800rpm.
This is 245° oil temp at idle with HV meling316 pump
