Like it or not, this is GOING to happen. Read what the article discusses, not just teh headline. They are not trying to stop us from working on our cars, what they ARE trying to do is make it illegal to modify the tuning or alter the electronics in the vehicle. This is the next step in stopping people from adding HP or removing factory safety features. They have found out they cannot block people from reading the ECM's to obtain tune files(look at the LML, people found a way around it), so now they are going to use copyright law to block peopel from altering there vehicles programming. You can bet the EPA is a driving factor here with this situation, and with them involved, you can bet it will get pushed through somehow. I don't agree with it, but it was only a matter of time before the computer card got thrown down, and manufacturers pursued that route to keep people from altering the programming. It will be viewed as no different than your home PC. Yes you own it, but they own the copyright to the software that makes it work, and thus you can't just take a program from "your PC" and give it to a friend to use on "there PC" without consequences.

You never "own" code, so in that instance I don't blame automakers.

Unless they pass the NRE costs of developing code onto car buyers why should they give it to the customer?

We don't give firmware to customers unless they pay for it at work. Buy a PC and you don't buy the code etc etc...

A copyright law won't stop people from cracking the ecm.

Well if this passes, it looks like I am going to have to get into the standalone electronic business. We will not modify their stuff, we will put in a complete new aftermarket ECM or standalone system.

There's ways around everything. We have brand new 6.7 powerstroke at work that were building for a company in mexico, no dpf. Had me thinking lol

One step closer to the ole government control, take the example of a unnamed software company giving us the ability to delete/disable emissions items. The long arm of the USA/EPA reached out and said hello to them in a not so pleasant manner....Many did find a work around as with all software...

This will never happen I can't even believe some of you think it will

And in a snowballs chance in hell it does pass it would obviously be the newest model year and newer. There is no way they could ever stop people from "hotrodding" anything that's been out for the last 100 years.

I don't think it will bit if they convince the wrong crowd who knows, maybe not this but something else, the media can make people who don't know what there talking about do just about anything.
