This will never happen I can't even believe some of you think it will

And in a snowballs chance in hell it does pass it would obviously be the newest model year and newer. There is no way they could ever stop people from "hotrodding" anything that's been out for the last 100 years.

Even though the Prius is more toxic. The hybrid battery, at the end of its life cannot be recycled and is considered toxic waste... I used to work for Toyota, the Prius owners are fukin tree hugging dipshits.

That's just it, they only think about short term affects. I work at a coal fired power plant, coal prices are negotiated over a period of years, so the prices are set. The natural gas plants they praise, fuel prices follow the market, they rise and fall. Maybe cheap now, but wait till natural gas prices rise again.

Woohoo for a coal guy. I work in the powder river basin alot...nations largest supplier of coal comes outta there

Back on topic though I don't see how they can come in and say I we don't own our vehicles electronic or not. If that was the case and we didn't then why do we have to pay to get "their" shit worked on and fixed when it breaks?

its no different than your home computer. you own it, but you dont own the rights to the software, you've only paid for the ability to be able to use it. like it or not, this is coming. it is nothing more than the next step in emissions controls. all it will do is drive out the big name tuners, and drive the business underground(or people will go to aftermarket ecms).

Yeah bro, I seen some pics of those Wyoming coal seams, crazy fat!

Back on topic, it's all about control, power hungry politicians, just look at Obamacare, they want their fat fingers in every cookie jar.

Very wrong. When you buy a pre-built computer, you get either Windows or mac os because those are the two mainstream, paid OSes. BUT, the x86/x86-64 platform is open, so anyone with the knowledge and skills can write an OS for it and the OS argument is null. There are also a multitude of free, open source operating systems to choose from should you not like either of the commercial, paid offerings.

As far as comparing the modules in our trucks to your home PC, what we're doing isn't that far off from going into control panel on your Windows PC and changing settings such as disabling services, changing power saving settings, etc. On the PC, you're changing parameters on the commercial OS that change the behavior of the computer. When tuning the ECM/TCM, we're basically doing the same thing - we're changing a few bits in the OS that change how it works. Unless we're changing the OS to something like EFILives DSP OS, in which case the argument could be made that EFILive owns the rights to that OS because it isn't a GM OS. EFILive developed the DSP OS.

As already stated, this is just yet another attempt of an over-reaching government to try and control every aspect of our lives .

How is he wrong...?

If you wanna write the OS to run your trucks motor, the air bags, suspension, etc etc, go for it. But since automakers pay the NRE and costs for that, its theirs, not yours.

I can see how automakers would want to protect their investments, you guys are looking at this in a strict sense of "big govt telling us we can't mod stuff!1!" but perhaps automakers just want to protect their code from being stolen by other automakers?

Ever look at the costs of getting a system approved? I know DO254 is teh bane of the aviation world, it costs a ton of money for firmware to be given a stamp of approval. Someone has to bear that cost.

One step closer to the ole government control, take the example of a unnamed software company giving us the ability to delete/disable emissions items. The long arm of the USA/EPA reached out and said hello to them in a not so pleasant manner....Many did find a work around as with all software...

Has nothing to do with what any of you are writing about, bottom line: You are tampering with part of the emissions controls therefore violating federal law, period....:thumb:

The mere act of drilling a hole in the exhaust manifold for an EGT probe is tampering (CARB rules)

Hence why I see this going through one way or another. Any way you look at it, I'm willing to bet the EPA is the driving force behind this, and once they set there sights on something it normally gets pushed through. Why else would this be not just about cars, but also manufacturers like John Deere who are also having to deal with there equipment getting turned up.

Which is why I believe sometimes you have to do what is wrong/illegal in order to do what you feel is right.

I agree with this guy^. Absolutely nothing to do with protecting their shit or the environment. Everything to do with control.

Think about really hard guys, GM, Ford, Dodge, Cat, John Deere, etc.... They already know when you've tampered with stuff... These guys designed it! You think they can't tell it's been tampered with????!!!! Nothing to do with warranty claims or protecting themselves from financial losses. Everything to do with controlling the populace.... The fact that they are willing to go to this extreme to try and control people should open your eyes folks.

With the data farms nowadays wouldn't take much to arrest, charge, convict, jail and fine a whole shit load of guys for tampering. You have the written proof, the vehicles, slam dunk in court and take a few vendors with them to boot.

With that threat looming we'll all be posting in the deep web with the pedophiles, drug dealers and the likes..

This has absolutely nothing to do with government control; it’s the OEM’s asking for intellectual property protection, plain and simple. Telematics and system integration are the future of the automobile and this type of technology integration needs to be protected. Once there is some type of government assurance we, the consumers, will start to see a windfall of automated technologies hitting the market. This has more to do with liability and our lovely litigious culture than copyright issues. Basically if your autonomous car starts to “Toyota” out of control because of something you or your shop did the OEM isn’t liable for punitive damages, which is a blank check nowadays.

x2...this is all it is.

You guys really need to take off your tin foil hats and stop looking too deeply into this. Its to protect the warranty/damages, and make sure that the engine isnt tampered with to the point where it fails emissions regulations (IE, keep the EPA happy). THATS IT. This is the car manufacturers doing/whining/petitioning, not the government. Car MFG's are whining (rightfully so) because theyre having to shell out millions of dollars to fix something you broke by your own stupidity in modifying something.

Well, and I guess lawyers/litigious society (sue happy people)...to stop people from modifying their vehicles to the point where they are unsafe and could cause bodily harm to innocent bystanders or other vehicles on the road....

If you doomsday clowns think it has some deeper subliminal message about "THE MAN COMING TO GET YOU AND WANTS TO HAVE ULTIMATE CONTROL ON YOU DOWN TO EVEN WHAT TIMES OF DAY YOU TAKE A LEAK...AND WE'RE GOING TO BE JUST LIKE CHINA IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS" you need to take a chill pill.
