whoptee freaking do. You realize every single car with airbags since the mid 1980's has an event data recorder?

The REAL problem is no one understands how this stuff actually works (including the idiots at USA Today, as if anyone who works for that newspaper really has half a brain in their head), and no one has a true technical understanding of the electronics, so they ignorantly draw up/ASSume their own worst dooms day theories of how these things work.

But im not going to make this some dumb political debate. If someone doesnt understand how an EDR works from a technical/electronics/integrated-circuit/software point of view, and wants to think that the dumb black box under their seat can do everything up to and including MIIINNDDD CONTROLLLLL then thats their own problem.

Oh BTW, you should probably throw away your cell phone, ATM card, and get off the internet too. Because you're 1000x more likely to be tracked/"hacked"/get-in-trouble with that stuff, than the freakin electronics on your car. :D :p:

x2...this is all it is.

You guys really need to take off your tin foil hats and stop looking too deeply into this. Its to protect the warranty/damages, and make sure that the engine isnt tampered with to the point where it fails emissions regulations (IE, keep the EPA happy). THATS IT. This is the car manufacturers doing/whining/petitioning, not the government. Car MFG's are whining (rightfully so) because theyre having to shell out millions of dollars to fix something you broke by your own stupidity in modifying something.

Well, and I guess lawyers/litigious society (sue happy people)...to stop people from modifying their vehicles to the point where they are unsafe and could cause bodily harm to innocent bystanders or other vehicles on the road....

If you doomsday clowns think it has some deeper subliminal message about "THE MAN COMING TO GET YOU AND WANTS TO HAVE ULTIMATE CONTROL ON YOU DOWN TO EVEN WHAT TIMES OF DAY YOU TAKE A LEAK...AND WE'RE GOING TO BE JUST LIKE CHINA IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS" you need to take a chill pill.

JMO.

What happens when one of your lock up boxes fails to unlock the Tcc and causes a wreck? Huh?

Jesus ****ing Christ. Lol this is funny. This is not about protecting property plain and simple. Just like Red snapper regulations aren't about protecting fish, they are about stopping fishing!!! Open your damn eyes Ben you of all people are smarter than this.

Rant over.

The fact that someone who makes there living tampering with safety devices/ vehicle electronic systems, is in favor of arguing for this type of non sense is really ironic.

I hope you got good insurance, cause a good lawyer would bury you. And yet you argue for all of this.

It's amazing how people are so willing to let all of our freedoms be slowly stripped away.

I don't care if there is an easy way around the law. I miss living in a free country where you could do what you wanted with your property because we lived in America.

You can try and stop some of it, but you won't stop all of it. Too many people are content to let the gov. think for them. Enjoy your freedom while you can.

Yeah I remember reading something about this on Jalopnik I think, a couple weeks back. Pretty irritating but as many have said, it was only a matter of time before this came about. Majority of these big companies are just looking to secure their investments and technical data whilst squeezing more profit out of the consumer by redirecting traffic back to the dealer for repairs. It definitely sucks, that's for sure. This is the newer age..time to find or make the Android of automobiles.

Oh man, that comment from Deere and GM on renting the license...hahah. Fix all the shit that goes wrong with my truck then. Too good.

I don't care what anyone says but Facebook is without a doubt the main cause of this the last couple years, it is the root of all evil.

Ugh Im not arguing "for it".

Im just saying, everyone needs to relax...theres ALWAYS ways around things. Look how many YEARS internet piracy/illegal downloading has been around, how long it took to actually PASS laws about it (from when it first became a thing). And then, after laws were passed, look how long it took for it to be enforced. And then after it started to be enforced, how many of "the little guys" actually got in trouble for it and were prosecuted? 5? 10? When is the last time you heard a "little Tara Teenager was busted and sacked with $10,000 fine for illegally downloading the latest taylor swift song!!!!" headline? Ok maybe once. But how many times a day are movies/songs illegally downloaded...its in the millions!

What you are going to see is the BIGGEST companies (read: offenders of the law that are stupid and obvious about their tactics...IE, H&S) get hand-slapped by the gov't, they will pay a fine, and go about their way.

Even if these "laws" do get passed, to think that regular Jim Bob down the street is going to get his door busted down and sentenced to death because he modified his truck is ludicrous.

Some people just dont know how to take off the tin foil hat that is superglued to their own thick head. Conspiracy theorists/skeptics of the world unite! If someone doesnt like all this doom and gloom, then they should stop whining and move to Europe. I hear the car modifying laws over there are way less strict than in the US (lol). Even some provinces in Canada have way stricter lift laws than 95% of states in the US. Im done arguing in this thread because its not going anywhere...

Technology doesn’t create idiots. That’s like saying guns create a violent society. Whoever made this meme (there is no evidence that Einstein recorded it or similar phrases) most likely meant a socially stunted society. Because to surpass is to exceed and technology hasn’t exceeded interaction it’s circumventing it. Society has become complacent because technology has made seclusion easier. We spend a lot of time on Facebook and forums being reassured by likeminded people instead of actually interacting. “God forbid I go out and find myself in a disagreement on an idea that’s solely based on my interpretation of someone’s biasness, published to their blog with no peer revision or cited evidence”.

Educate yourselves, the source material is out there, the Auto Alliance petition for inclusion to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is available. As is concerns from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is asking for provisions to protect hobbyist. But remember is this is for future technologies, like autonomous vehicles, advanced telematics, etc. and in many cases the protection of intellectual property ensures innovation and competition.

So, can we agree that this law is a little bit redundant, unnecessary, and well just a pointless regulation? GM, Deere, Cat, whoever, they already have more than enough tech in place to detect tampering? Right??? So what is the real reason here.... Humm. Hint: it's not for the good of the people. And really you know I'm no conspiracy theorist nut case lol, just very concerned with govt over reach!

To spin this just a little (point is still the same) NOAA gave Alabama a 9 day federal red snapper season last year, with a 2 per person per day catch limit.... Now wouldn't any logical reasoning person say, "Hey wait a second, if fish stocks are this low, that we only get a nine day season, why even give us a season at all???" Btw, there were only 3 fishable days out of the nine. 6-8 foot seas suck. Now this past season, we only caught Red snapper... Not one other reef fish was caught.... The reason for that you ask, we are so over populated with RS that they a eating out all the other reef fish. So it's not about protecting the fish... It's about control AND lining certain people's pockets with cash.

I know I know off topic but still applies. And you're right, this will probably have net zero impact on our sport, but it's just a waste of time and money! We have much more important issues as a country to deal with right now. I'm just sick of the Mickey Mouse bullshit our current and past administrations have levied on us.

Does an excavator make the operator lazy because he or she isn’t out there shoveling by hand?

Technology doesn’t make anyone do anything; it’s an inanimate tool and can’t directly influence you. Yes it makes life easier but we’re limited by own ambition, discipline and ignorance. You’re not lazy because of technology it’s because you’re just lazy.

You right, it means it take less people in some cases with more skill or in some cases, no skill to do something that used to take a bunch of people with a descent skill set to due.
Technology is a crutch anymore, because its at our figure tips with in turns makes us lazy. No need to have to remember stuff because we can Google it or something like that.
