What's the best gooseneck for the money?

Do the PJ and Big Tex gooseneck trailers use pierced-frame construction ?

There low profile trailers do. One draw back I have found with low profile trailers is on uneven terrain its a lot easier to drag back end of trailer.


Couple pics of my Big Tex low profile trailer. Seem to be very well built trailers.

Thanks for the photos.

If I want to haul a 15,000 lb. tractor with a 1,500 lb. loader, how much margin do I need ? I know it's wise to buy all you can afford but do I really need the 12k axles or do I have enough margin with 10k axles ? It's $1,100 to upgrade to 12k axles.

Also, the tires on a trailer I'm looking at are rated 3,090 lb. each. Is that enough or do I spend another $1,100 to upgrade ?

I'll be pulling this tractor 120 miles one way.

I had a PJ 24ft straight deck gooseneck with 2-7000lb axles. It was well built and didn't have any problems with it, pulled like a dream. I have a 20ft load trail equipment trailer now and it's really good for what I need it for

Don't skimp on tires as others have said.

Any of the manufacturers you have listed will be good.

If the tires are 3,090 lbs then you have enough tire for a 12k axle. There is know way you will be legal hauling a tractor of that weight with a pickup. One thing to remember is when talking about weight is you have to have the trailer weight calculated in also. That trailer in my pics weighs 6300lbs by itself. So its rated for 22,500 lbs then it can haul 16,200lbs. But I would have to have a CDL to haul that much weight legally. Now will that trailer handle a 15,000 lb trailer I know it will.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I've talked with sales reps. from Big Tex and PJ trailers dealers here in Iowa. Both seem knowledgeable but when I asked the PJ sales person if theirs was a pierced frame he said he didn't know what that is. The Big Tex sales rep said theirs is a pierced frame.

The PJ and Big Tex 25+5 trailers are competitively priced and both have the LED lights, 10k axles and load range E tires standard. To upgrade tires to load range G (14 ply) is aprox. $1100 and to upgrade axles to 12k is another $1100.

My next step is to get my tractors weighed so I know exactly what I am hauling, and also see each of the trailers in person.

Any additional input or advice is appreciated.

The way I understand it is PJ and Big Tex trailers are made pretty much the same. They are made within an hours drive of each other. The load range E tires is all you need. One thing I like about the big tex over the PJ is the gooseneck hitch is made of an actual jack so you can adjust your hitch height easy.

I would be hesitant to by from a salesman that doesn't know what a pierced frame is. If you are not hauling commercially you don't need a cdl. The dot is concerned with registered weight and axle/tire weights not your GCVWR.

i hotshot a Kaufman 26+4 with 8k
as for needing a CDL to haul your personal stuff over 26k is false. i got in a an argument wit the shipper where i picked a a JD tractor up..even showed him the rules. state and federal. he kept saying the cops (non DOT) would shut you down and send you to jail.
in short if you are moving "comerece" then you are required to have a CDL A, B, C and a Bill of Lading, and HOS logs if operation oustide a 150 air miles of you base location becasue you dont own the items that are your trailer and someone has hired you to move it for them

Moritz trailers may be the best bang for your buck. I had a Kaufman 24' and loved it, but the moritz i have now is built way better. I have triple axles, but for what i bought it for, I couldnt pass them up. I would prefer a dual tandem.

How about mud flaps on the trailer.... are they a good idea ?

Anyone have three spring loaded ramps ? That looks handy in case I need to haul my 4-wheeler.

IMO if you have a low ground clearning rolling cargo then it would be a good idea... IE indoor forklifts wont go up a standard cleated dove tail with ramps

yes.. usually one can pick up a set 12x30" for 15-20 a pair..i bought and modified a set for the front flaps on my truck.. got some 12x18" 16ga sheet metal from lowes and screwed them on to keep them some sailing. doing something similar for the trailer

usually the spare tire is an option.. avg person rarely puts more then 12k a year on a trailer..
i know kaufman has it posted on their site
