What turbo set up?

Oh man, oh man. I've been where you are right now with my LB7. Blew the first motor with the stock IHI. Blew the second with a Cheetah. I "just wanted to have a little fun" too;) Now that I have a built engine, I should last a little while longer lol!

Look, I know you want to go faster and make big HP. We all do. But it's going to cost you some serious coin. The stock IHI, a good tuner, lift pump, Banks Big Head, will already push you past the limits of the engine. Just save that money for a built engine. You'll thank us later and be miles/money ahead lol!
I know motors may blow up at that power level but it doesn't mean I'm going to be beating the hell out of it every day at that power, tuning has a huge part to play in that role.

No, 700 isnt hard to achieve today, its just how guys jumping into Duramaxes seem to think these engines can magically hold that power level in stock form. I know Cummins could, but an LB7 or LLY Duramax won't. There's always exceptions, but they are ALL on borrowed time.

I guess my point is that there's a right way to do this, and a wrong way. If you dont care about killing the engine and having to spend even more money replacing whatever the rods take with them when they go, then by all means keep doing what you're doing, and have fun doing it while you can. Just have another vehicle handy to daily drive when your truck goes down.
I'm not trying to say that every duramax should be able to put down that kind of power, but with the right tuning most can! I've witnessed this several times on lb7's and lly's with stock bottom ends on the dyno and not just once. Some have ran them at 600-700 for a few years with no problems. But if your beating on the truck every day on power like that then ya shit isn't going to last. Just trying to point out that with the right kind of tuning and a healthy motor that they are very capable of making that and surving if your not too hard on stuff.

I will be the first to admit my ignorance of turbo setups but in some cases won't a bigger turbo reduce drive pressure and make more hp, while being easier on the motor? With correct and conservative tuning of course.
That's kind of what I thought too lol

You know lots of trucks over 700hp on stock bottom end. Lol. You must already know all of the secrets, start sharing them with all of us.

Well just to name a few of them that I personally know and have witnessed making these numbers more than once:

Caden knight out of Utah-lbz-752rwhp single s475 stock bottom end

Mike mikstas out of Utah-lly-754rwhp single s472 stock bottom end

Robert Christopher posey out of New Mexico-lb7-725rwhp single turbo also stock bottom end.

Dmitir Millard out of Utah-02 lb7 (silver crew cab) 780rwhp on big twins and stock bottom end.

These are just some of the few I have witnessed make that power on stock bottom ends. Also maybe talk to tony martino of moonshine tuning if you don't believe me he was there at some of the same events as me and saw it all, and because he tuned most of those trucks. Tuning comes plays a big role bud. Also I'm sure these guys I just named are on this forum, so go ahead and ask for yourself since you think I'm some kind of bullshitter lol

And how many of those guys blew up their motors and now have built motors? Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I know two of the guys you listed now have built motors (I'm not counting Dmitri).

They do now lol, but that's pretty much their peak power, but how many times did they make 650-700 and actually drove home afterwards lol? A few times. Look I'm not saying I'm going to push my truck that high on power, I'm just looking for good advice on a turbo set up that can put me around the 600-700 range. Even 600-650 would be perfect with me. I'm just trying to build a fun street truck for now till I can build my motor later on.

We're just trying to save you from a blown motor before you're ready. Trust me when I say this is a forum full of people that found out the hard way, take our advice. As for turbo's, I'm still voting for a S468-S472. It's a great option to carry over to a built motor down the road.

Dyno and racing, no sled pulling for me lol that's super hard on shit lol

For a single go with an s472 and when you have a built bottom end you can change the cover to get an s475. Or triples with the s472 and two s366s.:woott:

As far as twins go s480 over stock.

P.S. you just HAD to capitalize your sig, didn't you? :roflmao:

Using cknight and dmitri as examples of doing things "right"? Good Lord.

Oh well. O/P, just do your thing. Obviously, none of us know what we're talking about.
Maybe we'll all learn something new from your inevitable build thread.

Throw a 366 on with stock fuel and be done with it. That can get you around 600hp but not give you enough fuel to let you really try to push it. You can still blow it up but maybe it will live a little longer.

Mike's motor was a complete freak of nature. Yes there are some trucks that hold together at the power level for a time but there are a ton more you haven't heard about that haven't. It's a complete crap shoot. That being said if you can afford your truck to be down then go for it! If not, it's better safe than sorry.

Once you have that kind of power, I found its really difficult to not play with it :woott:

My vote is S472

If you're absolutely dieing to upgrade turbos I would go with a 468 cast or FMW; possibly upgrade to an S472.
You'll get decent driving manners and more power when you want it.

With my modified IHI's(stock or 63.5), I cringed every time I got on the dyno in fear of my motor popping. It's all a luck of the draw, some get luck some don't.

After seeing countless threads like this, is it safe to say throwing a bigger turbo is a "unsafe" idea unless you're prepared to buy new rods at some point?

Depends on how aggressive you get with tuning & how heavy your right foot is

My lb7 has lasted 180,000 miles with s366 and max effort tuning. The truck has 280k on it. They can last, but if you beat on it all the time, it will pop. My truck actually went thru a built sc trans.. For you disbelievers out there. It was making enough power to eventually limp a stage V trans... It's since been upgraded to the latest gmax unit.

This is a hardcore racing forum, the guys are quick to tell you to build your motor (and with good reason) but not everyone wants to build a motor first. Bottom line, it's your truck and if you want to have fun with stock motor and push it to the limit, go ahead. I'm not gonna lie it's fun as hell to feel 600hp alive. But you have been warned:D

Oh don't get me wrong man I def appreciate your help and advice I know all you guys are just trying to help a guy out, it just sucks when your seeking help and you have people reply with to you with smartass answers. but I do thank you tho! I appreciate all the help. As for the truck I was just trying to get help on what to run in the mean time single or twins so that when I also get my fuel system all upgraded then all I would have left to do would be to save up for a build. So basically what I have been trying to say is that when I build my motor the fuel and air part would already be there and taken care of so I would have room to actually make more power once the motor was built and not have to worry about buying the turbo setups later on.

How much did the turbo set up you have run ya?
