those tile shims were a cool idea when they came out but ive noticed alot of guys are prying up other tiles too much from it and leaving hollow tiles from it. mainly just fly by nighters or unskilled workers though. its increased the sales of our Uni-Bond so im not bitching

if you use them right and are not setting a whole house, i love them

Lol unskilled here... this is the first time I have set tile. What I didn’t know from just common sense I have learned from a tile forum and YouTube.

You had me worried that I made a mistake until you said whole house. I’m only doing 1,700sf which is everything but the bedrooms and other bathrooms.... for now...lol.

In all honesty I have seen mixed reviews on them. Some say they are almost a necessity on the long thin tile like I’m installing due to them not being “true”. Some say the same as you did. My tiling job is a lot better because of them. Just like with everything tile work is 90% technique and 10% material. I’m using a 9/16” trowel and have back-buttered every tile. The tiles I’ve pulled up and check coverage on I’m at between 90 and 100% on everyone. I’m sure my lack of skill has left a few voids, but I trust my work over 50% of the contractors out there.

Here’s the best part for this perfect storm of a tiling disaster. I tiled my stairs. I had several pros tell me this is a bad idea. Only time will tell and I got no one to blame but myself.

This weekend is Mom's estate sale. Been interesting. Lots of laughs when people comment. "This person sure liked to collect pigs", and I tell them, "Well, our last name is Bacon. It kinda comes with the territory."

At home, been helping Roni paint the deck when the rains stay away, and when Im not on the mower trying to keep up. Things have been held up this year due to the weather and dealing with Mom's house.

Over there....besides the yard....am painting the upstairs stairs, trimmed the pine trees around the house that were touching the roof or just looked ugly, re-cleaned the gutters, cleaned the garage and Roni and I took the unsold items to Goodwill and helped her weed out the flower beds again.

My brother has been trimming out the basement after we had B-Dry come in and do their thing, plus about a dozen other things on my sister's list.

Its been a crazy couple months, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Her house should be going up for sale in early July. Shouldnt be on the market too long.



But Im telling you, there are just not enough hours in the week. It all has to get done somehow, though.

Sleeping a average of 4-5 hours a night catches up with a man real fast.

Only thing I can think of on why tiling stairs is a bad idea is the substrate typically has more flex in it then say a concrete floor. If not done right tiles can pop off or worse, crack

Ya a lot of people say the stairs flex to much. The 2x12s shrink/expand and twist a lot. I’m hoping that won’t be to big of issue since my house is 15years old now.

Thanks! Working on the upstairs now. Again questioning why I had to do tile when I saw how many high and low spots the floor has. Oh well nothing I can’t level out. I’ve been held up waiting on the trim for the tile to carpet and new to old tile transitions.

if they start popping and you want to keep the tile, PM me dozer. We make a product called Super Flex that is literally designed to let tile "float" to a certain percentage over the substrate. there is alot of compound movement on there vs say an expansion joint (what this was designed around) but its been used in this kind of area will good success. would be kind of a bitch to do now though.

That's a beautiful house Tom. I can't believe how cheap the price is. They built a new development across from our house and are selling 1/2 acre lots for $86,000 and we don't have forced water or sewer in our town. I've lived where we live my entire life and it has changed so much, farms are disappearing fast.
