Allison 5sp: well....F#$%ed up, broken torque converter bolt

was finishing up putting my trans in, and broke off one of the short bolts that came with the suncoast converter.:angry4:

anyone dealt with this? is there a magic trick to get a drill in there? or am i pulling the trans again?

im guessing im pulling the trans again, but i thought id check here first

pulling the Trans again. I really don't see how you could get it out without pulling it, at least not without a very high probability of messing up the threads.

Bummer... Easiest is pull the trans back out as mentioned above. Super tight to be drilling and trying to use extractors in there.

Yeah thats what i figured, super bummer, everything else was in.

Ill contact suncoast and see if they sell the bolts seperatly. I saw Merchant Auto sells a set for aftermarket converters, does it matter or just go with suncoast?

Go to a hardware store and buy a grade 8 of the same size. Most bolts you find online for aftermarket converters should work, as long as they don't have the long nip on the end.

May not be a good idea. Depends on where the thread ends.

And now you know why I always do the TQ bolts immediately after the bellhousing is bolted up...that and if one drops down inside and I can't get it out...bellhousing, then TQ, always. Then everything else...

I would go with the proper bolt. To long and it will bottom out and could mess up the lockup clutch. To short is obviously a problem as well, plus they are shoulder bolt... Best just to get the correct ones.

Definatly want thw right ones, i was just looking at MA , as they had a set listed for aftermarket converters, they look the same as the suncoast, suncoast's site didnt show the bolts seperatly.

Just sent andrew a pm, he should be able to get me some bolts

yeah, probably not a bad idea haha, i did them last because i wanted to take my sweet time on them, i read alot about them coming loose, so i was super carefull when i put them in, masking tape in socket so they didnt get dropped, hand tightened them all before fully tightening, put them in every other bolt hole first to tighten them evenly, then i got stupid and over tightened them, ill be using a torque wrench for sure next time

I just put my trans in my truck yesterday. I hate the converter bolts on these truck. Such a pain to do, especially by yourself. But ive managed to get broken bolts out of tight places with a magnet and pick. Depends of it's free moving in the threads. Anyhow how do you guys even get a torque wrench anywhere in there? I always used a shallow 15mm socket, 3inch extension and my flex head 3/8's ratchet. And i get them nice and tight with that

I used a mile of extensions to get by the front of the motor, but I had my radiator support out. I don't have a clue how builders have them out, built and back in in a day or two. I'm sure if I took one out and put it in once or twice it'd be easy but looks like a pain with the truck together.

How accurate is it when you use the long extensions to torque the bolts down? Seems like you would lose alot in the extensions?

The bolts have that dry loctite on them, as well as a drop of regular loctite. I was just too paranoid about them rattling loose.

Doing it the 2nd time should go way fadter than the first, my down pipe is still off so i have acess to all the bell housing bolts on the passenger side of the truck, i just used a rarchet wrench on those, the other side i used a 30" extension, as for the getting the converter bolts, i read a thread on here actually, using an impact, 15mm 6point and an imoact rated universal(non u joint type) took them right out.

The most pain to me was the fuel lines in the way all the time, seriously considering just running rubber from the cooler

As well as being a hurry, i want to get it dine soon, but after i broke that bolt, i went thermal and had to just walk away, i ordered a 3/8 IR impact to help take it apart a little faster, need to clean the garage up some then start in on it again.

Good news is, if i have to ever do it again i wont be doing it on my back :D
