If your going to buy a Porsche, make sure you buy a Turbo model, not an N/A. They have Intermediate shaft Bearing failures that could potentially blow the motor if not handled in time. this is a serious issue for 996's but is also common in 997's as well.

Go find an old E55. Those cars are fun, diffrent yet classy, powerful/fast, pretty easy to find and there are a ton of aftermarket accessories to add if you want...

Porches are nice but if you think a duramax is expensive get ready, lol. My buddy just had to drop 50k on a new motor for his 911 turbo...

Too funny, I was going to say the same thing. They're pretty inexpensive to get to 550 at the wheels and they're fun to drive.

There's one thing that you might be forgetting .... much like your Duramax that is built, you can build up the LS's too. That Z06 might be ok, but if you add a supercharger (or turbocharger) look out. Same thing for the Z28. No, your not gonna get a factory hotrod, but you can build one :).

True..
You can build up ANYTHING! LOL...I'll be one of the last guys that's gonna forget that
What I'm not forgetting is, its significantly easier to produce HP with a dessign that started as a forced induction application. The 911tt is AWD. The 911 "seats 4" and neither a camaro or a Z06 produce the same driving experience as a 911 does...its simply an AMAZING vehicle to drive...the way it turns into a corner, moves, handles and feels...seriously, I wasn't exaggerating when I said it changed my life and that I connected with the car. I've just never felt like a car "fit me" like the 911 does...its funny to me too, cuz my first "real car" was an 86 944t and I loved that thing, although I spent more money constantly fixing it than I did to buy it, and it was being worked on almost as much as I drove it...but it was a fun, engaging car to drive that I have some very fond memories of. It's only taken me 22 years to be able to step up...

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Not a bad idea or car, but MB's are definitely not my style
Yeah man, the Mezger 3.6tt is a VERY expensive engine...I'd literally cry if I had to replace it...one of the things holding me back from just jumping into this car and driving off into the sunset is that it's a full bolt on, turbo car. It's like buying a truck like mine, from a dude like me...and I worry that the engine will take shit...

Dodge viper, twin turbos and sidepipes.

Thanks for the heads up! Thays the plan, 911tt...
Although, Once the IMS bearing is upgraded the NA engines are pretty bombproof, I wouldn't mind a Carerra 4s...and it wasn't an issue at all after 09 when Porsche redesigned the 997 and introduced the 997.2...but I can't afford the entry price to step into that arena

All I know right now is, I need a 911tt

Unfortunately Porsche isn't known for great reliability. Just my two cents but I'd stay away from them if you can't afford to fix them. Big advantage to the corvette is reliability paired with reasonably low cost for upgrades and repairs. Have you driven a C7?

One of the guys in marketing for MBRP (might even be the CNIC of marketing IDK) lives in Lexington, KY and has a taste for expensive yet impressive driving machines. Looks like he now has a 991TT? I know absolutely zilch about any porsche other than I used to love the ol 911 Turbo with huge wing on the back and boxters are a no-no for straight dudes. :spit:

IDK the performance of Jesse's car but it looks absolutely badass! He loves him some HRE Wheels too, that helps the sexy factor, immensely!

I hear ya about the reputation of Porsche's reliability on a whole, however the 911 seems to be a fairly reliable platform. Like with any make and model, they all have nuisance issues and most all have a production run that is a true gem.

The reports from owners that I've read on 911 forums, and the one guy I know who "knows porshce" say the 911can easily be made into a bulletproof DD weekend track machine, simply because they DONT break and require the same maintenance as similar cars put through the same paces...simply out, they're engineered not just to perform, but take the abuse of continuous performance...

I hear ya about the Vette, I desperately wanted one and know of their attributes, good and bad (from a research standpoint) the bottom line with it is, turns out it just doesn't fit my personality like I thought it would, or my needs...I haven't driven a C7. I wasn't looking in a price point to put a C7 in my market, especially aa C7 with performance package(s) but even if it was AWESOME, I still couldn't pick up my kid or wife, if I had my kid or wife with me, with that car...I'm just not at a point where I can have something as impractical as a 2 seat vehicle, regardless of how "impractical" a 911 may seem, its not, its just expensive as all get out...

But that's the real beauty of buying a used 911tt, particularly the 996 and 997.1
These were supercars in their respective time, demanding a sticker price between $115,000-$160,000...!!!!

I can buy that same car, I've found them with as little as 4k, 7k, and 12k miles, for $65,000 and as little as $30,000 with only 60,000 miles....the one I'm looking at with only 22k miles and upgraded with 200whp of turbo kit/exhaust/clutch, short throw shifter and 30mm RUF lowering springs is $55k.

$55k for a car that's still, practically new, and was $136,000...and now has $10k in parts upgrades alone! It's literally the fastest thing I've ever been in let alone driven, it feels like a 10sec car...from the factory they made mid 11 passes and 0-60 in 3.8sec...pulled 1.01 on a lateral G and topped out at 191mph...and damn, they're just Sexy to look at too

While I wasn't comfortable trying to see what "I could make this car do" on my test drive, it was very clear that this car was incredible and while it was fairly docile and comfortable to drive, it demanded alot of respect.

It was light years better than a C6, the two are not even comparable to me.
Really, when you look at the gist of it, the performance parts for the Porsche arent much more expensive than they are for anything else...an upgraded porsche turbo kit is no more ecpensive than a sweet twin kit for a Dmax or even Corvette, upgrading the plumbing and tuning by itself on a 911tt would be like adding a twin over stock kit, or adding headers, intake, cam, stall on a vette..its the OEM replacement parts and the labor that kills Porsche owners.

I'm not looking into getting into a debate as to what's the better car, I really was just hoping to hear from an enthusiast who might own/drive/track a 911 that also is a Dmax nut, the 911 forums are world wide clusters of primarily mechanically uninclined idiots who have money and go to performance driving schools and clubsport race as a hobby and I find it tough to really get the inside info I want.

The info is there, but these platforms are 15 years old and the content of the forums is so...out of touch with the DIY mentality...most these guys wouldn't even change their own oil.

Is his a brand new 911?
All 911tt's are simply put, beautiful. I think they're masterpieces of performance art which, in their respective times pretty much dominated and won racing events, but also won an affinity from the masses

I bet the older one you're thinking of is the 964 911 turbo ;)
Beautiful car, its styling is still incredibly striking.

No boxter...but a Caymen S, yeah, I could dig a Caymen...but its only a 2 seated

Dear lord....I don't care what model year/code it is, if its a 911tt, on staggered, dished/concave HRE's...its SEXY!!!

911 and performance just kinda go hand in hand, each model (targa, Carerra, Cabrio, turbo, GT2,3,4) all deliver something different, they all focus on one aspect of a complete driving experience, more than another, and that's the rub...Really, a RUF supercharged Carerra S would be friggin sweet, turbo body, brakes, sways and 2wd light...and a WHOLE LOT CHEAPER than a turbo S model...but where's the fun in that?
I like me some AWD
LMAO

Here's the real rub for me right now...I don't want to be modifying my next car, really at all. So when looking at buying it, I'm not thinking in my head before I own it or as I walk away from a test drive, thinking "I could make it better" it needs to be able to scare the life into me with its performance and it needs to demand my respect in its OEM form, meaning, I don't look at it saying "it would be good, if"

No, this time I want to own it because I think it's already perfect, and learn what's not as I own it. A 911 is practically a complete mystery to me, I know a bit about them, their model years and have had posters of the 911 turbo w/Aero kit on my wall since I was 6...but when I look at the car its still an unknown, its curves, its quirks, its performance ability...everything. I've never lived a life where that car was apuzzle piece of a part of it.

I always saw myself owning a Corvette. I finally got to a place where its a reality and didn't like the car? Go figure...

I've dumped so much money into so many "off the shelf" cars to make them something they'll just never, ever be...so much I could literally buy a new 911 turbo outright...its time I just got the damn 911

It sounds like you've already made up your mind. I haven't done any specific research into anything of this nature, but I have done my share of reading both online and in magazines as well as watching shows where these sorts of cars are compared. I have seen nothing at all to indicate a C6 Z06 can't keep up with any of the other perforamance cars of the same era, and I can't fathom what you would be looking for from a performance aspect in a car that it doesn't deliver. Whatever you decide to go with, I wish you luck in your decision.

Personally I would go r35 gtr over 911 but that's just my opinion I guess, I'm in no position to own either. For the same money though you could have a bad ass mk4 supra which is the route I would go.

I agree with Josh, I'd say you've already made up your mind. Nothings wrong with that, just go buy the car, but if you're ever down in Tx with the car I'll be happy to remind you of the mistake you made with my 6K lbs truck:hug:

I have made the decision in my mind to own a 911, and I do like the turbo. What I haven't decided yet is which model code, a 996 or 997.1 and that's what I'm looking to figure out and why

I really want to drive a few more models, but if there was anyone here that had one and could share about it to help me concentrate my efforts, that would be really cool.

These cars deliver such a tailored driving experience, I guess a person really needs to feel for themself. I would like/want to know what the difference between the models from an in seat POV bcuz, For the price of a turbo car I can get a GT3...or, maybe for the price of a newer Carerra S/GTS and a RUF supercharger I could get everything I want and even keep my truck...which at this point I'm no longer afraid to get rid of as a 1500 rc would fulfill all my utilitarian needs now, but I do love my Dmax

Josh, I am and was no way implying that one was hands down the better performer, as I believe if you put them both in the hands of equally matched driver(s) and Id bet you net the same lap times. I wasnt saying theyre not a good performance match up either, the fact of the matter is the two are a good match, I think either one would net a competent driver pretty much the same lap time at a track although I think the driver piloting the Vette would be ALLOT more tired at the end of the day.

I just think, as a car on a whole, IMO the 911 is a better car...and not speaking of the new C7 Zo6 or soon to be 991 991tt, but comparing previous model years, year to year between the Z06 and 911tt, they're simply not a comparable car IMO.

Just start at the chassis, AWD vs RWD for one, turbo vs NA, and price point isn't comparable either. Theres a saying about getting what you pay for...but bottom line is even tho they may have similar "stats" they're worlds apart

The new C7 Z06 is extremely amazing as a street and track machine and truly is the pinnacle of Chevrolet design and performance engineering. It is a remarkable machine and its the best GM has to offer. The 911tt is that for Porsche. Me, I can't wait until Porsche unveils the new 991 911 turbo S next spring (not that I'll ever touch one) they always introduce the turbo into the market 1 year after a new model design and build it from parts from that years racing platform. The 991 911 turbo is going to be a standard setter, it will be insane!

But for the record
I just don't think any previous Vette has ever been as refined as a Porsche 911 is. Forget performance and look strictly at fit and finish alone...IMO, the 911 is just a higher quality, more comfortable vehicle...or, it has been anyways, the new C7 is a different story, it is rather exquisite inside and out, but I still don't think it's in the same category as a 911..

Just a dumb idea I have.. Why not a g8 6.0 6 speed with a procharger?

Would be a lot less $$$ and your still in the gm family lol.
