That's hilarious, I talked to him for 1/2hr today about his project. Cool dude to talk to and a neat project. You boat guys got me all worked up about them now, lol!:D

We tend to do that... Lol. You think people spend money on trucks, its 1/10 of 1% of what they will drop on a boat. If your smart and can figure out the market the money flow is unbelievable...

Dave is a great guy that does his own rigging work. His other boat is also home built, a turbine powered cat. So he has skills. He's also dedicated to making this Duramax setup work.

I'm planning to be over your way later in the week. Ya be around the shop?

Here is some pics of our oil pan mods specifically for this marine build. Since the boat will likely see some big waves, I wanted to make sure it's not sloshing oil all over the rotating parts.

We started with LML blocks and their upgraded oiling features, but wanted to use older medium duty pans and covers. Easier said than done. But a local machinist made it all fit. So now we are left with a front sump lower pan setup, which needs to be a rear. That part was pretty simple for my welder buddy.

The modified lower pan holds about 15 quarts now, so we can also lower the oil level and store it all under a baffle. I also tossed a couple baffles inside the lower pan for good measure. The upper pans have a port on each side just perfect for twin turbo oil returns. Added a little plate to each side so as to direct that oil down into the lower pan.

All the custom pieces so far have have been CNC or water jet cut. But for this baffle and the engine mount plates I went with a local guy who has a nice little laser setup. All I can say is wow.. Clean and precise cuts. Haven't bent the oil return louvers down yet so you can see just how nice these lasers cut. And he's cheap :)

Dangit man! Everything about this build is so well thought out and executed. Really appreciate you sharing the build with us. It's amazing to see! :thumb:

Yeah I considered doing dry sumps. But for long term reliability we opted for the new style LML pumps with baffled deep sump pans.

All my friends with race boats and dirt track cars have lost races and trashed bearings due to a simple belt failure. Since this is a pleasure boat, figured better keep it simple.

Just got home from Indy, first PRI show in 26 yrs. Only spent 4hrs at the show, but accomplished a good bit. Put faces to a few voices, and picked a few brains. :)

Also checked out some strange looking pistons,, and may have found someone to build my tube-N-tube up pipes. Local shop, seemed pretty popular with the ProMod crowd...

Quick shout out to everyone who took time to chat, and special thanks to MarkBroviak for the full tour. :thumb:

Stumbled across this dual EGT gauge with alarms at the show. Might be of interest for anyone who needs to watch both banks.
DG222-Small_copy.png

Two probes, one gauge, with programmable alarms. Not listed on the site, but they offer it in their very clean looking signature series gauge face also. Leading my short list for this build.

If those are like the one I have (dual boost/egt) and they haven't fixed issues with them in the last 5 or so years, I wouldn't recommend it. The connections on mine had to be WELL lubricated with dielectric grease to maintain good connection/reading. And I believe Pat/McRat and others had issues with the screen/display dying? It did get warranteed IIRC. What I'm getting at is that they have been problematic for people.

Are those diamonds pistons? The one on the left looks like their forged piston with steel land.
The one on the right is funky. And info?

I was seriously beginning to wonder if anyone would catch that....:D

Yes those were photographed at the Mahle display. Left side is our std cast units [hardened upper ring land], right is a Dmax Monotherm. I stopped by their booth and whipped out a pic of Dave's new forged with the whole side blown out. Spent next 40 min talking pistons with a design engineer.

First, he feels their cast will out perform the forged in most situations. For all those reasons well stated in old threads here. Oiling is key to cooling,, and hardened ring land is there for a reason. They rated that piston at 800hp and have good data to back it up. He also felt Fingers oval bowl mod has proven to extend that "safe" power level up a couple hun with proper tuning.

Was not a huge fan of TBC however, stating that the extra heat reflected has to go somewhere else. Like valves and head surface rather than being carried away in the oil. But felt it should extend the life of the piston in shorter extreme duty runs.

Now as for that Mono... They modified a few Cummins pistons and sent those out to a select group of customers for testing, feedback, and to be returned. They received very little feedback, and only one set was return after a year. Seems some take to long to build engines, and that slowed progress... lol

Second issue was tooling. The test sets were all modified existing design and very expensive to produce. They have been waiting on a production line to open up that can run a "new" monotherm piston. That is now ready, and I was given a date of mid year these should be offered to the pub.
:thumb::thumb::thumb:

They did feel a bit heavier than cast, but that may be cause it's all on one end. No scale handy to get that exact number. I liked the design, think it's long overdue actually. Not pictured, but there is a oil cavity under the dome same as cast alum. I walked away with a much better understanding of pistons for certain, and will be pestering the heck out of them come spring...

So a reasonably priced monothern is in our near future?!
Well I'm excited to see them. Hopefully it goes better than last time.

My only comment was; "what do you consider expensive?"

I know people who will take a set of modified units tomorrow, even if they cost 4k. I got the feeling it was seriously just a lack of real world data that's holding things up. Tooling is a big deal, and why risk that capital unless your certain it's a better product.
