Yes. Very slow hull. What transmissions are you using kid? What the target goal for WOT engine life?

Figure if can make that fast, than everything after should be easy. LOL

It did run 100ish with 950 gassers.

Transmission plans got changed due to missing out on the only pair available in the version I wanted. They were custom built 1.5:1 first and 1:1 second. Next choice is the COAN Marine version. Basically a well built powerglide with 1.86:1 first and 1:1 second.

Goal is 600 hrs or more rebuilds. But am sure this will depend on what power levels and how long you stand on them. I mean at a 500-600 lower setting they should run a long time wide open. The other end, 900-1000hp is gonna be limited or a RACE setting. Which we will have to see how cool they stay on the dyno, and what RPM they seem happy..

Hey MarkBroviak, what are the popular bolt pattern options for an engine dyno coupler?

I'm finishing up the zeroed flywheel details and just realized I won't have a standard TC pattern. Bolt pattern I'm drilling will be for a 26 spline marine damper, 8 bolts on 9" dia below.

If you have a common bolt template to use, please send one over and I'll add it to the design.

Awesome. And that's why i tell everyone to go to Danville #1 in customer service. It amazes me how Mark and Larry have time to answer questions and return phone calls or emails.

Needed to check our rod clearance and chamfer adjustments to fit the new Callies cranks. Since we don't have the cranks yet because they're waiting on bob weight figures to balance them, found myself in a catch 22 situation.

Luckily Callies facility is only a few hours away. So I grabbed two modified test rods and drove up to the factory. Nice place and really great people. Got to see the raw unfinished Ultra Billet Dmax cranks first hand. And for my drive, a free T-Shirt :hehe:

According to this rack, someone placed a BIG order...

Are the rods a different dimension than stock? Or did you shave a bunch off the big end already? If that's the way I'm seeing it. Also does the fillet sit inboard further than a stock crank? I'd hate to ask, but what does one of those cranks set a guy back? Or if I have to ask, does that mean I cant afford it :roflmao:

Needed to cut the chamfer side of each rod about 0.045 - 0.050. They narrowed the rod journal 0.090 from stock.

Actually they are only around $3,500 stock balance, and $4500 for internally. I ordered 2 from Jeremy, since majority of that rack is bound for him anyways...

Was really cool to see them in them at that stage before polish and nitrite treatment. Not even the keys are cut in yet. They make a lot of well known high $$ performance marine engine cranks in that building also. So left with a warm fuzzy feeling after discussing this build with them.

3500 actually sounds like a decent price to me as well. specially if it ends the crank issue. gunna have to set a rainy day fund aside for this crank and a set of fingers cast pistons :D

Yeah I agree, $3500 wouldn't be bad at all if you could be more confident that it won't break randomly.

We talked a good bit about the wicked Dmax harmonic yesterday. They believe, as has been mentioned on here several times, that the lack of main bearing to rod bearing overlap is likely the weakest link. Not a problem to oversize the mains if the block will allow it. Wish I had time to test that on something before this build.

My biggest concern now is how to insure the Mallory slugs don't back out on the internal balanced setup. Plan A is to notch them, and back fill with a small SS weld bead to lock them in place. The more I learn, the less comfortable I am with any current designs..

That's not too bad. Add that to the list. They doing anything other than stock stroke? I'd assume so but what's their price difference

What do you mean by notch them?

I never ask about strokers. After walking around the place, not much they couldn't build if the demand warranted it. They also make rods, just not for Dmax yet...

However they did say if anyone needs new OEM crank gears, have plenty in stock.

Grind a small flat on the outside bar edge, then backfill crank with tig and some SS rod. Since ya can't weld to the mallory, just weld a tit to the crank bore that prevents it from walking out. This angle is purely open for discussion at the moment.

But since I know of at least two Dmax cranks where those came loose, I'm certainly adding some type of extra insurance. If not, I'd likely take the odds of externally balanced cranks breaking over a full on tungsten rod explosion blowing a hole in the boat...

Is there a reason you would use Stainless filler? The machine that did my sbc did exactly that to my crank, but used steel rod.

This is a wicked cool project:thumb:
