Truck painting project

Figured I'd start a thread to document my truck painting project and to ask questions for you paint pros out there.

The paint on my 99 is in really bad shape, several areas where the paint is scratched through to the primer and/or metal, and the rest of the truck has tons of clear coat scratches and rock chips. I thought about trying to repair the existing paint, but I think in the long run it's going to be better just to repaint the whole thing, plus then I get to pick whatever color I want.

Since I don't have the time or money to paint the whole thing right now, I'll be doing the truck in phases. My plan is to prep a panel then spray it with plasti-dip to (hopefully) protect it until I can afford to finish the job. I would just prime it now with 2 part rattle can urethane primer, but from what I've read it's not UV resistant and will eventually break down over time. Once I'm ready for the next phase, I can just peel the PD off and continue on with the project. I figure if I take my time and do a little bit here and there I'll do a better job and will hopefully be able to do the whole thing myself rather than paying a shop.

I started on the left bedside yesterday afternoon. There was a nice long scratch through the base coat into the primer, several rock chips, a small dent in front of the fuel door, screw holes in the bed rail from an old tool box, and the paint was missing where the OEM mudflaps used to be.

I did everything on this panel by hand yesterday, using two small sanding blocks and a combination of 100 and 220 grit paper. That sucked. I'm going this afternoon to buy an orbital sander and some larger sanding blocks (and a damn respirator, I could taste paint dust for a couple hours after I finished), hopefully will make things easier. Still have a little bit of work to do on this side.

Here's last night's progress, after feathering out scratches/chips/flaking paint areas, filling the dent in front of the fuel door, and filling the two screw holes on top of the bed rail.

Anyway, now I understand why body shops are so expensive, this is a complete PITA. Will post more pics as the project progresses. I think I've decided on Cyber Gray as the eventual paint color, which is a factory paint color on the newer Corvettes. I'll have a cowl hood by then, still on the fence whether or not I want to do any kind of racing stripes. Maybe I can experiment with them a little bit using plasti dip.

Can't wait to see the finished truck. That's about the color I would love to paint my truck. Are you thinking black or flat black for the stripes? I think that would look sweet.

I'm not sure about the stripes....if I do decide to do them, I may do them in plasti-dip flat black so I can remove them if I don't like them.

This is the hood I'm looking at getting (Reflexxion brand, this is my 2001 that I sold a couple years ago), after seeing pics I'm not sure that the stripes would look good with the shape of the cowl. But I don't like this as much as I remember liking it when I had the truck either, so now I'm trying to decide if I even want to bother with the cowl hood.

Here's tonight's progress. Left bedside is ready for spray. I have a total of probably 6 hours of work into it to get to this point. Definitely understand why body work is so expensive, it goes really slow.

I feel your pain man, I had 52 dents to fix or fill, it took a week of full days to do the prep work, before paint. It was a royal pain.

Yuck! I was figuring I'd have something similar, that's why I wanted to do it a little bit at a time.

So after having multiple people tell me to skip the PD and use epoxy primer, I decided to go ahead and do that now instead of PD, then when I'm ready for color I'll do a urethane surfacer, then base and clear coats.

Went down and bought a HVLP spray gun set and some epoxy primer this morning.

Left bedside is done, turned out pretty good I think! I'm not going to mind driving this thing around in primer either, doesn't look half bad. In the right light some of the feathered areas show, but I think the urethane surfacer primer will take care of those.

How long should I wait before I start putting this side of the truck back together?

Tailgate and fuel door are ready to spray, I'm going to try to get the other bedside prepped and sprayed tomorrow too. I don't think it was in as bad of shape as the driver side.

For the base and clear, whenever I get to that point, I've pretty well decided I'm going to need to rent some paint booth time...garage is a little dirty, and I can see a few small spots where either some kind of fiber or dust got into the primer. Not a big deal now, but I don't want that crap in the final coats.

Looks pretty amazing for a novice (no offense:hug:) in his garage!

I have seen some really ingenious garage tech employed to create a makeshift spray booth, had filtered ventilation via some house fans, all it took was some good plastic, a few two by fours, a fair amount of duct tape, the fans and some furnace filters, to make the booth and the guy I watched sealed of and cleaned the floor by washing it with soap and water, rinsing it, and leaving it "heavy" wet, then the plastic side walls actually sealed off to the floor and the water kept any possibility of dust from the floor rising up and contaminating the product.

Looks like you got the skill to pull it off;)

Thanks!

None taken, that's exactly what I am :woott: I took your advice and "mopped" the garage floor before spraying today (it was mostly damp with a few small puddles when I sprayed), I think that kept the dust down. I didn't see anything in the finish today like I did yesterday.

Glad I could help!!! Might be my first post that actually helped someone:rofl:

Yeah man, that looks awesome! Have you wet sanded it yet?

Keep up the good work, I am very impressed with what you have been doing, been following this build of yours, can't wait to see it all finished:happy2:

Thanks! No wet sanding, according to the guys at the paint store I've been going to I don't need to. I have gotten a good pattern going though...spray a coat, pull truck out of the garage, mop the garage floor (PRO TIP: don't tell your wife you're mopping, she'll try to hire you to do the rest of the house too :D ), go out and sand, spray the floor down with some water, pull truck back in and prep for next coat...seems to be working well with minimal dust issues.

Change of plans, I'm REALLY liking the satin black look, so I'm going to attempt to do Hot Rod Black as the final topcoat color, should give me a nice satin finish.

First primer/surfacer coat after spraying guide coat:

First coat sanded down, ready for second coat:

Second surfacer/primer coat on, guide coat sprayed again. Currently waiting for this to cure enough so I can hit it with some 400 grit, then on to the color coat!

Your ambition & ability to follow through with your projects is something to behold! I agree, the satin black primer looked dang good imo so the hot rod black should look sweet!!
