You fellas have obviously never been screwed over by a crooked shop before. It happens, unfortunately more than you all think! A lot of times it's the dealership too!

Why don't you have the online retailer that sold it to you so cheap, install it? Or better yet, call them for some technical support on what they sold you....

I can't imagine a professional shop not wanting to install a box of parts someone brings them, in there $30k pickup, (which they know your going to hold them liable if anything goes wrong) and do it super cheap for you.....

If you want cheap I recommend Wal-Mart or McDonald's.

What's the world coming to.......

completely agree.

500 bucks to do the job sounds like a average deal to me. ATF isnt exactly cheap, nor are quality filters. then you still have to drop the VB and mod it!

Cheap people really bug me. Pay good people what they are worth IF YOU CAN'T DO IT YOURSELF! Maybe the Chinese can get into the transgo install business to help American tire kickers. Maybe Walmart can start selling diesel parts. I get not wanting to pay any more than you have to but somewhere along the lines you acknowledge you don't have the skills to fab parts or engineer them so you pay they guy who can. That guy spent a lot of his time and money to fund/design/engineer/test/ market/mass produce your FING part. Pay the man and keep your $ in the US

I'm located in BC Canada, 10 min north of border above Bellingham.

My rant is mainly focused about local shops telling me completely different information then what everyone on here says about the product.

You won't find any support from local shops, pricing ranges from stupid to outrageous. Do it yourself or get in touch with Jurasic, Duramax Services, in Chilliwack. I'll PM you his number.

It ain't cheap to do business... All of a sudden your 500 dollar job ain't so profitable to the shop owner after all of this. Lot of risk on his end to install your parts. Why call a second shop if price wasn't the issue at the first? After all, I thought you had a good relationship with the first guy?

I didn't mean to come off arrogant in the first post, if that's how it sounded.

Fluid was $100, filters were $75, so $75 labour for the flush seems fine.

I was just expecting the VB mod to be a bit less, but everyone seems to think its about right, so maybe my idea of price was just too low to begin with.

Technically it's 2 valves with 2 springs, and then you have the 2 check balls and springs that go inside the trim valves. If one isn't careful it is possible to put the trim valves in wrong and not get the springs in straight. When this happens the first time the trim valve strokes through the motion the spring inside bends and the check ball blows out. Then you have a REAL NECK SNAPPER of a shift. not to mention the whole valve body must come out, be separated as well as many valves and soenoids removed. And then theres that pesky problem as of late with many of the trim valves sticking in the valve body and requiring deburring and polishing to correct. The last 3 I did got me on this one, and it isn't fun spending 1-3 hours sitting there polishing and deburring trim valves and the valve body when this happens(if you put one together with a burr on the trim valve it will score the bore and then you have all kinds of fun to clean that up). So yes many just drop in no problems with 2 hours of work, but some can fight you for 4-5 hours with all the extra stuff that is needed. And some of us while were in there will go through and fully inspect the valve body, break out the scotch brite, and polish everything to make sure it is perfect as well as reaming the E valve bore.

So depending on what the shop you went to does, there quote sounds a little high but still pretty close.

You guys make it seem like all shops are honest working, working just above what they get parts for and all.... Which is far far from the truth.

I see nothing wrong with finding the piece for cheap and doing it yourself, if not, what the hell is a forum for? Just to show case what your wallet gets you at someone else's shop..?

I mean, come on. Sure support local business etc, but a blind drive to always using shops for stuff is stupid.

I have no issue with someone doing it themselves. But don't come on here and cry when/if you mess it up and the shop that quoted $500 to do it the first time now wants $600 to fix your screw up.

The directions that come with a trans go Jr sucks for a diy. When I did my first one the cone screen fell out. Took me forever to find out where it goes.

As for shops it seems like many don't care anymore. There are a couple local ones that let motors sit open for weeks uncovered. Painting gauge pods right next to trucks. Not informing people on dpfs and keeping them.
Its hard to trust them now days.

The point is simple... If you do not possess the skills/tools to accomplish tasks on your vehicle, dont bitch about what it costs to pay the guy who DOES. Has nothing to do with being showy or flashy. It costs that shop or individual money to do business. Just because some shops are better than others on workmanship/honesty that doesnt mean its fair to assume all of them are out to screw you and do a bad job.

All of Transgo products were meant for the professional. That being said; most of them can't read or decipher pictures either.:roflmao:

Don't forget the most important part any shop is in business. Profit! That has to be in there somewhere to keep things going

I would walk away from any shop that offered to "flush" my Allison tranny, you can get that done at Iffy Lube if you think it is a good thing.. I also wouldn't buy my own parts for a shop to install unless I OK'd it with the shop first. Leads to a lot of finger pointing if anything goes wrong regardless of what caused it.

Thats not what this thread is about. Nobody says there is anything wrong with him getting the parts and doing it himself.

The thread is about buying the parts elseware to save money then that same shop not having as good of a deal or attitude when it comes time to install them.

Some people forget that part. I agree there are plenty of bad shops, and plent of shops that charge too much for what they do, but in the end it comes down to the consumers judgement and you usually get what you pay for. Just do your homework.
