Oh yea Im trying to be REAL careful. Truth be told I HATE anyone working on any of my vehicles when the rare time does come. I sure as hell wont be having some no name tuner doing it. Friend or not. I'll pass. Im just waaaay to anal for that. Especially when these trucks cost as much as a small house. Thanks for the heads up though. Then you have guys like the one I dealt with last weekend. I do tuning on the side as a hobby when I'm able to help pass the time. I don't charge much, mostly just enough to cover the VIN license, and my V2 in case it quits on me. I do it through a friends shop, and it helps him as he makes money off of it, and I get something to do every once in awhile. A guy came to him to tune an LLY, we were all set, then he found another local guy who promised him the world(smoke which I will not do, 500+ HP and his stock trans to hold, and 30MPG, you know the drill). They end up calling me to come look at it because the guy fried his ECM trying to flash it. Went and looked at it, and the ECM was fine, he had left the aftermarket chime module installed when he tried the flash, and it interrupted it after the erase command was sent. He then charged them to tune it AGAIN because he said it was a VIN problem with his truck, and he had wiring that caused it. I looked at it with the radio module unplugged, and had no trouble linking to the ECM, but it was blank needing a tune put in it. They had me talk to him to see what all he did, he swore he didn't do anyhting to it besides license it twice, and who was I, where do I get my tunes, theres no way I write my own as it's just to complicated. So I proceeded to ask him did you read the stock file out? He said no, so I asked how did you aquire the base file to tune it? He started babbling, so then I asked did you get the VIN and find a file that way? Turns out he bought an unlocked file from somebody else, and is just flashing the same file into everybodies truck he does, and is charging them $600 a pop to flash and put in a DSP5 switch. The guy even had an EDGE, so I said why didn't you set it up for serail switching? He hung up the phone on me.
So be VERY carefull who you get to tune your truck, and like said above, make sure you can get ahold of them for retunes, and how much retunes cost.
The way I see it is if its good enough for some of the main highly respected guys on here then its good enough for me. Just going thru threads and seeing what sigs say and making a list of companies to call.
