Why do people find smoke so interesting? I will be the first to admit that when I first got a diesel I thought it was cool, but I honestly do not know why. I'm doing a tune for somebody right now, and you would think I kicked him in the nards when I refused to build him a smoke tune for one of his DSP positions. He went as far as to say at least leave me some black on the big tune, I don't want it to all clear up, even if it means I lose a little power. I told him it would puff some black on the big tune during spool up and that is where I left it.

I even tried explaining to him why I don't do them anymore, and what smoke tunes have cost the sport. Another guy he knows just got a $500 ticket for blacking out a bus stop, yet he still wanted one. I just do not understand why many of us thought it was cool at one time, and why so many people still think the youtube videos of people blacking out bus stops is so cool. And this guy isn't a kid, he's almost 50 and still wants to be a diesel ricer. Even has the dual pipes out the back so he can "spread it out" as he put it.

Yep I have had a couple people ask me to do it when I have built them tunes and my answer is no every time. I've even had guys compliment me on the great tuning and then say they decided to go to a different tuner because the other tuner would give them a "smoke tune".

I just don't get it. I feel lucky that I never got the itch to have a "smoke" tune in my truck but I am guilty of having a lope tune for a brief period.

Loping was cool 7 years ago before everyone knew how easy it was to do.:roflmao:

Smoke and lope are just for attention, and for those that don't think you can make power without smoke. You can pull into a parking lot and get instant looks with a lope tune, no matter what people think. Even the haters will look.

I still like a little smoke when I'm rolling into it but like that it cleans up. It's a diesel, it has to have a little. Parts of its personality. Most of us on here have grown up enough to know when enough is enough and when it makes our sport look bad too.

I tried doing the pilotless tuning for awhile, but it was just to annoying for me to take. And the wife refused to ride in the BURB with pilot shut off, said it sounded like a FORD.

Im a fan of lopy tuning, but smoking, not so much. At a light ill make a point to ease into it just so I don't blow any or very little. I refuse to be "that guy"

I was like that too when I first got my tunes... I always look to see if people are driving behind me, if so, then I just take it easy.. I have regretted ever going for the extra smoke, Im just waiting for my tuner to have time to clean up my tunes!

Excuse my lack of knowledge... but doesn't the smoke tune just equate to extra diesel being injected in and not fired which in essence also equates to a decrease in fuel economy? If I'm way off could someone please explain?

(I prefer the cleaner running, better fuel economy, but still bad ass sounding way my truck is with it's tune and exhaust)

I remember back in the day I would figure out how exactly to feather the throttle and get the rpms up just enough to smash it down and make it smoke the most. Now I'm doing the exact same thing, just trying to prevent the smoke.

If I even see a car coming either direction I feel guilty when there is a cloud hanging.

I was guilty of it. But I was 18-19 at the time and thought a smoke switch in my 6.0 and smoke tune in my duramax was cool as hell. Now I hate smoke the little my stock cummins blows annoys me

The only thing smoke is useful for, is tailgaters and asshole drivers. They get fogged the **** out.

I think smokes okay when it comes to big big power but for these everyday trucks negative . It's not only dangerous to others it's just dumb and pretty sure a waste of money and prob harmful to internals . Not sure tho . I'll admit I use to think it was cool to . But notice how many duramax a don't do it . When I got my efi live from idaho rob I didn't care at all about smoke . I'd rTher have some pulling power then smoke . I think most can agree right ?

I know here in northern Colorado the majority are dodges, hardly ever see a ford or gm blowing much smoke. Not saying they aren't here, I just never see em

Smoke is visible, simple as that. People who don't know any better think it means something it really doesn't.
But too many people out there with the power to stop everything diesel-performance-related in its tracks have smoke on their radars now. All they see is pollution.

Yeah, I used to like smoke......way back in 2005. Not so much for a long while, though.

TX of course
I really only use it to screw with people I know and sometimes if someone really pisses me off. Lately if been playing the with the maf to get the smoke more under control since I tend to just stab the throttle.

when i first started modding my truck i thought that my stock lb7 was so bad to the bone when i had a quadzilla in it, then when i got efi live from kory and got my 150 tune and it didnt smoke at all but just before spool up and it felt like it had waaaay more power then the quadzilla 135 is when i realized that smoke is stupid. Now that i have my built trans and upgraded turbo, my big tune does smoke pretty good on spool up but there is absolutley no smoke now and the truck halls mail. I love it, people expect smoke from my truck when i go by and it doesnt and they think its gay. But yet when i take them for a ride in it they change their minds rather quickly.

Smoke, yuk, like the clean tune (Thanks Ferm) on mine and clean even at WOT and do not do that often, but what annoys me just as much is the trucks running straight pipes. I have no desire to draw attention to myself via a smoke tune or loud exhaust, the track, OK, Still debating on switching my straight through 42" long Walker truck muffler to a larger offset Donaldson. Years ago a friend always said "Loud is not always fast and heavy is not fast", the second part of the statement became wrong with regards to the D-max trucks even in stock trim....
