No one have the answer to this question being at the drag strip?

Fastest 'truck' i've seen, all #2 and air thats a regular around here was 11.20 on a single s480. i think it trapped about 124 mph. big top end. That was no spray the entire run, though he was trying to spray it (had a bad solenoid or something). He backed it up with 11.21 and no bottle in his truck just to make sure any naysayers were put to bed.

He's not a racer though - he's a sled puller so doesn't come to the track much... was very impressed when he did though. Also - that was at our elevation - i'm sure he could pull off a better run lower elevation. Not sure what DA was that day, but sure it was close to 7000' or worse... never really heard of any days better than 6800 all year long at our track...

Are you talking about Mat Moon? He has a killer truck for sure, loved his explaination of his rear diff. Poor man's spool, welded the sucker!:thumb:

I think one thing that doesn't come into play, which has been proven i think over and over at the tracks in particular - is elevation.

Twins vs. Single - surely for 'all around' use, there really can't be a very good straight across comparison when you throw in elevation.

I think both sides of the argument have merit - however, i think when the "use for dd, towing heavy, racing, etc." argument gets used, and the poor guy doesn't live at sea level or within 1000' feet of it - the argument for twins gains alot of strength.

I'm not sure how many people can testify one way or the other to this - but i do know of a few people here, in Salt Lake running big singles. Most of you know them in fact on this board - but no need to toss names out. I know that one of them that put down about the fastest times i saw at our track on a single charger (Ken knows him too) had to spray more NOS than a guy should have access too - but it was still very impressive to say the least. His single charger does spool 'ok' for the elevation - but it still is nitrous assisted basically right off the line - point being there is no way this truck could tow more than about 5000 # without burning to the ground. EGTs at the track even with all the spray are off the chart.... he "quits looking when he sees 2000*"... I'm sure there's not alot of twinned trucks that have seen 2000* or much above - but i could be wrong.

Anyways - drifting off topic a little - point is that one thing not mentioned or factored in to anyones post so far, that i have seen - is elevation. If a guy is going to be towing up in the mountains, particularly with significant weight - or even just in higher elevations period - for 'all around' use, i just don't see how the argument for a bigger single could stand up. At the track, sure - with some help - but for all around use, i just don't see it.

For reference, for those that don't know - Salt Lake during the summer / racing months experiences usually 7200 - 7500' DA - a fact that has caught alot of out of town 'fast' trucks far enough off gaurd that they couldn't even get a single good pass in at some of the events (Edge Days, DHRA, NADM, etc.).

Very good post, as stated elevation plays a big part of pressure ratio and how all chargers work. Too bad most maps indicate sea level gains.

Matt is one of them - but fastest i saw at our track on a single was a kid you've raced a few times in Max'd out in the unlimited classes :D

he likes to spray alot... and his new project from what i know of it should definitely be low 10 potential if not better... crazy SOB

Matt is the fastest single charger at our track that i know of. I'm sure theres been a truck here or there that i have missed, but he did 11.21 @ 124 i think it was.. pretty damn close to that anyways... without any NOS. He may have had water going then but i don't know for sure. His truck is definitely a fun one to watch go.

I can assure you all I have never used nitrous to spool my truck. That would be a waste of good nitrous:D. lol Mine comes on with a wide open switch. I would run twins but i'm a low buck racer and just can't justify the price. Nitrous is not cheap but for me I had everything so it was a easy choice. Jeff

Whether or not my truck is normal or not I dont know. What I do know is that I have gotten basicly all I can from a 64mm turbo on a single pump and 40 over sticks. I didnt really think that I would ever go a 12.10 with a 64. I think the truck probably has a 12.0 or ever an 11.99 but I may never find out on this setup. I know that the streetability differences between a big single and twins has already been won by the twins but as for racing I honestly believe it is all prefference. Turbo lag is non existant when launching at 2500+. As for egt's all I can say is I see 2000 by the end of the track at 46 lbs of boost, I cannot comment on twin temps. Odds are my next step is twins but my new house may not allow that for some time.

I don't think I've ever seen EGTs over 1400 unless I had boost leaks.

I rode in Bobo's truck when it was first built and was astonished at the torque it had with a 40 horse tune that was in it as it was being broken in. I dream of the day when my egt's dont go over 1500.

The last twin set up on Max'd Out which is gone now, sold to OSUbeaver would see about 1500 degrees or a shade over on the huge injectors we are running going through the traps.

bump....im thinking of running a S480 on the track.....from a tuning prospective, what are the major differences between big singles and big twins? i figure there's increased timing to spool the big single....what else? FYI this will be on a built motor - forged pistons and race cam and stage 2 heads plus some more extras. is picking a converter that difficult these days to put this power to the ground? how about other tranny issues - are twins more tranny friendly than the big singles? i want 1000hp on fuel if possible, i will use nitrous in high stakes races and learn to tune accordingly.

I have yet to see a s480 single truck hit 1000 hp without juice and it takes a good amount of juice too , 3 of my good friends are all running the s480 as a single and most are 800-875 or so on fuel after being reeeelly dialed in . As far as tuning no there inst much difference other then you have it back words on timing more timing will slow down spool not speed it up, and i would probably bring full fuel in a bit later , and tweek the timing a bit .

And as far as converter call Mike , he has a custom high stall Presicion , I am going to be using it in my truck next year , or if you can find a used 1055 , basically anything 2500+ stall RPM

thanks trent. so is there any cheaper option for a big single to hit the 1000 mark on fuel other than a Precision Turbo? Tony Burkhard has built a few big single trucks that are around or above 1000 on fuel...i haven't asked him yet for specifics.

and i was a little nervous about the 1055 when i saw a crapload of them for sale...i am planning to use a Precision

The 1055 is a great converter , I would have gladly used mine another season , but I wanted to try this new converter is all , I loved the 1055 even on my S300 as a single . I am not sure on the turbo , or what else it takes to get 1k on a single because most singles are rated to support t hat # I just know most don't hit it, and has made me skeptical when guys say they hit , the most impressive truck i have seen with a s480 is Matt Moons truck and he hasn't hit 1k yet and that truck is an animal........... he was undefeated in 2009 I keep trying to talk him into going back east for a few pulls to see how his truck would stack up with the big boys .

If I can do 821 on an S475 with an 83mm turbine and rough tuning I don't see why an S480 with an 87mm turbine wouldn't get you 1,000 on fuel. At your altitude I could see why it wouldn't Trent but at sea level I would think it would.

Like Trent said a big single needs less timing and less fueling down low to let it spool. With an 87mm turbine you would need a loose converter and I would also recommend the high stall Precision - either their SP (Sled Pull) converter or a custom loose one (call Mike L).

that's what i was thinking Dustin but I am not an expert by any means. and since i am not a tuner....this will be a learning experience....i guess i expected the bigger turbine to need more fuel (more heat). as far as the converter...i was thinking about the SP Precision in a high stall version for sure. in your opinion though, would it be a smart choice for top end power on the track? as i understand it, when the converter locks it doesnt drop as much RPM's, would the traditional converter allow me to produce more boost because of the increased load on the motor? or is it negligible in this situation?

How long will the motor last on twins? 100,000 Miles? For the normal daily driver?

All depends....mostly on how its tuned, how its driven, what other mods you have done (ex. dual CP3s)

I had a stock turbo LLY driven mostly:cool2: on a tow tune go at 84k, and others will last longer, every motor is different.
