Anyone on here build 5" intakes for a s400 single turbo application Or knows where I can get one?

Your going to have to provide alot more info. You won't be able to find a "1 size fits all" intake for an s400 single kit. There are so many variations in pedestal height and spacer height and other clearances.

I wonder if a 4" intake chokes down the turbo rather than having a 5" intake? Has anyone tested anything like that? I wonder if spool up would be better?

Absolutely, the neck down is a restriction as is the type of filter. Anyone who tells you otherwise is fairly oblivious. Any inlet of 4 needs at least a 4" intake and a filter the match the minimum flow of the compressor inlet. Any s300 or equivalent I recommend a 4" Intake and an AFE 24-91039 or the longer AFE 24-91036

The AFE 24-91036 is my recommended minimum with anything s400 frame or equivalent.

I don't like any other filters besides these, mainly because its my matter of opinion, but I've seen best results with them. Everything I've ever tried has sucked the filter minder in.

my s476 works just fine with a 4'' intake spool up is perfectly fine

5'' is not needed 4'' will flow plenty of air flow for a s4 single

just because something works doesn't mean it is optimal. But you are right 4" will work on an s400 no problem as long as the filter is correctly spec'd. Most filters out there don't flow well enough for a charger that flows 90+ lbs per minute.

ITs a afe one of the ones you mentioned. I'll dyno mine with a 4'' and a 5'' to see but I really doubt id notice my turbo flows 110lbs a min iirc

So take the filter off, problem solved.

X2 I am learning this the hard way. Makes me miss my old lb7. With the lbz I don't only have to worry about turbo heigh but also it working with my Y bridge and cold pipe. Decided to make my own.

As for running a 4 or 5 inch intake I think it depends on if you are taking your turbo to its maxx output. For 5-750 I would think the 4 inch would be plenty. 750+ I would go to a 5

I won't post a pic of the very ugly 5" I made for my S464 but it was a little less than 5" near the turbo inlet and worked just fine. I'd say go 4" as it makes for more room.

A 4" intake still cant pull the same cfm of air as a 5". So yes it will work but its not optimum.

Ask any woman, an extra inch makes a big difference.

If you look at the smaller S4 turbos though a 4" would probably be more than enough with a proper air filter. They choke them down quite a bit. uploadfromtaptalk1409754141088.jpg
An S480 or bigger I would want 5" though.

What about... what about a 6 inch intake? :umno:

Was just wondering this I'm about to do my s475 swap finally could probably get away with 4 with my power goal but I'll go 5. I was also wondering about the exaust side being necked down, that's for another thread but isn't it the same concept?

I believe Killerbee and a few others did testing years ago and found that restrictions on the inlet side affect efficiency much more than on the exhaust side which is under pressure. Ideally you don't want restriction on either side though. But going from 5" to 4" on the exhaust side doesn't do as much harm possibly because you have heat on that side plus pressure maybe?

The smaller the diameter the higher the velocity due to less volume available. This in turn will create more turbulence at the face of the compressor wheel.

Why do you think modified intake horns are so valuable on a IHI charger?
