if the engine didn't do it before and now does with the same tuning, i doubt tuning is causin the smoke. If the tuning changed and now smoke, then that could be a possibility.

Are you guys checking the balance rates when the issue is happening?

i changed out the cp3 for a lbz one along with the regulator. I had tony from ridgrunner diesel tune it for the fpr difference. I no longer have his tuning (sold the ecm) and i have been running my own efi tuning, i dont have the idle perfect and it smokes a little at startup and is noisier.

That is what Casper did when it bent rods testing the GT42. Ran GREAT, but white smoke at idle. Compression was ~250lb IIRC, and normally I'm seeing 320 using my tools.

I noticed this last weekend with mine, (last weekend was in the 30's or so)but once it warmed up it was fine. It has never done this before and I was thinking it may be due to the lack grid heater. Any thoughts?

compression tests do not lie! get the $30 harbor freight kit and do it. my lbz smokes white for a bit while warming up without a grid heater on cold mornings.

Was the white smoke at idle even when it was warm, or just when it was cold?

just the ghosted code. white smoke when cold like any older diesel in the winter and let it warm up a bit longer in the winter.

I'm going to say injectors are on their way soon. My other 02 I had over 3 years ago did the same thing. It took about 2 more months afterwards then it was at the dealer for injectors. Had fuel in the oil and 4 of them were bad. That thing was bastard stacked and is still running today with over 250,000 miles. I would think if your rods were bent it would smoke at idle warm or cold and would have a slight vibration or shake at idle all the time. Plus if you've been running your stock tune since the last time you ran it and it just started would make me lean towards injectors. Either way hope it dosen't cost you much as if you do the work yourself it should be that bad money wise. This is my opinion.

Injector pump is shot.
Care to explain a bit further? This CP3 holds rail just fine, but is there something else? Ive suspected the regulator has caused an issue, and that'll be something we look at next weekend.

Hope everything turns out well. I know how you feel about telling your wife, I hated to tell mine that I had to pull my built motor for a broke crankshaft.

riddle me that....

What causes lots of white smoke at idle when engine is cold but none when engine is warm, the smell of diesel in the cab on occasion, and an uneven idle?

I think I know, but I have to get over to Eric's to do some tests first...

balance rates are to be done with ECT above 160* as per tech manual

what the ambient temp when the motor white smokes on start up?

its getting colder out alot of diesel white smoke when cold..even stock.. not to say there isnt anything wrong.. im sure you are already seeign good frost(~30s) up there in southern MI.. if it does this when it 70+ out side deffenatly you have a problem..

compression test would be a good thing.

Bu...ambient usually <45*. This morning for example. It could very well be excess fuel from the adjustments I made to the FPR voltage, but I dont know.

Noreaster...Intake air heater was reinstalled back before my last drag strip runs (yeah, not smart...I forgot about it) and everything has been working since.

I'd be willing to bet it's your injectors.
When these injectors start to go the nozzles become worn and start to drip and not atomize on start up when the cylinder is cold. Once the engine warms up the white smoke goes away. If you keep driving the truck a while longer you will start to notice white smoke even when it's warm. I've replaced lots of these injectors. We have a diesel fuel injection shop and usually sell over 500 LB7 injectors a month.
