Performance Cam Question

I bought Smith Bros pushrods when I started my build way back when. Figured it'd be a good idea with the heavier springs and more RPM.

I have the race springs in mine and i was told i should go to the molly push rods and skipped it for now when i go for bigger tips ill prolly get the push rods and install at that time.

I'm still running stock rpm. I think I would benefit allot if I raised it a few hundred. Whats everyone's thoughts on a good rpm to run on a stock engine with a 475?

I usually shift a truck with that combo at around 3600 on the 12 , 2-3, 3-4 and 3700-3800 on the 4-5 . maybe more if I am tuning it in person and can feel how hard it is pulling at 3800, but with a stock engine I wouldnt go much higher than 3800 .

Thanks for the info, it pulls strong in the upper rpms when I manually shift it but It revs so quickly its hard to drive and watch the tach at the same time.

So I know head work would be ideal but can I get away from it for the time being? Help me save a little money plus I am thinking of doing the LLY head swap when my injectors go bad.

At what point is head work needed or suggested.

i would say 750+ it would be very beneficial. i dont plan on doing it right away on my build tho

I shifted my truck at 4200 the first go around with a s475 and stock bottom end and the valve springs hated me. It wouldn't even go into 5th gear. I changed it to 3800 and went from a 12.18 to a valve floating 5th gear run at 11.94. My valve springs were shot from numerous 4800 sled pull runs " more than i can count" but i also had 4.56 gears while all the drag racing took place. I would say around 3700 is a good place to shift. I think i might back mine down alittle once back together.

jk. In all honesty though, I got the specs on an honor system that I wouldn't share them so I feel obligated to be true to my word. It does require reliefs, not sure just how much yet though. It'll be the first time this grind has been in a pull truck. It's been in other high profile engine builds though. We'll see how it goes. It likes RPM apparently so that should be a plus. It hasn't been used in an air-limited application that I know like sled pulling so we don't know how it'll go for sure yet.

And I keep forgetting to comment but I've known of a few pullers (all LB7 fwiw) that have bent/broken stock pushrods & even a bigger whoop-daddy one. That one mighta been a fluke though cause it hasn't happened again to my knowledge with the aftermarket ones except the one.

any reviews, good or bad, on the SoCal 8460 cam? I am impressed by its streetability with the s475 but I have nothing to compare it too other than stock motor trucks. It sure likes rpms though, the truck really feels like it has a powerband above 4000.

Is there also a 3388 SoCal cam? I've heard really good stuff about a SoCal cam that's xx88 but I was thinking it was 3388 rather than 6688 but maybe not? Whichever one it is, I know it's been in engines competitive nation wide!

I think the 3388 is the mild cam that doesnt require reliefs. 6688 is the more aggressive cam.

Yeap, 3388 is the no valve reliefs required cam and is in 90% of my builds out there and it works great. Really nice wide power curve with a ton of torque but doesn't perform as well as the bigger cams upstairs.

surely Socal has more than these two cams out there..I know I've heard of a 6460 cam as well...I just wondered if those of you who have tried multiple cams have tried these. There seems to be a large movement toward Hamilton cams these days...TTS cams have been tried before and I haven't read any great reviews on them vs the competition. Diesel Pros hasn't been talked about a lot either.
