What is the standing record for most hp, and how many passes on theses pistons? Also, has anyone coated them to help with heat or is that not needed with the oval bowl?

has anyone done Forged fingers pistons as well?

I'm going to order a set of these within a few days. Should I get them coated or not? What about valve reliefs and compression ratio?

There is a lot that goes into that question, not trying to be a smart a**. What other parts are you looking to use? Some cams do not need valve reliefs. What are you using the truck for? What turbo or combination of are you using?
I'm going to order a set of these within a few days. Should I get them coated or not? What about valve reliefs and compression ratio?

The engine is getting bored out Monday, then it'll be going back together as I get the parts over the next few weeks. This is what I'm most likely going to end up with:

Finger's pistons
Carrillo rods
SoCal 3388 cam
75% over DDP injectors
Wicked diesel stage 3 cp3
ARP head and main studs
Keyed crank
MA 700 transmission
ML Precision converter
AD 165

Still deciding on what turbo to go with. I have a set of stock/s475 compounds, but I don't think I want to put that back on a built motor. I'm thinking either a Danville 72mm vgt, or an s468 which I would twin later. The truck is my daily driver, and I don't tow much. Most of the towing I do is a 19' fishing boat, or an enclosed trailer with goose hunting gear.

That cam does not require valve reliefs, if you never plan on changing the cam out I would prob not get the reliefs put in. If there is a chance you'd change it out them you'll be pulling the pistons to get the cuts put in. I would prob go with compression around 16.5:1 for what you said. If you call Jon (fingers) he is a big help and will answer all your questions.

On my first built motor I had the 3388 cam with Jon (Fingers) cast pistons with no valve reliefs 16:1. Socal stage 1 heads and Danville VGT 72mm over Batmo 483. The truck made over 1100rwhp. I reved that motor to 4400 rpm and a couple times to 5500 rpm. When I stripped that motor down it looked like new. Unless you plane on putting in a bigger cam down the road I would not do the reliefs.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm not going to do anything crazy with this truck. Maybe break 1k horsepower, get a low 10 second pass, then turn the power back down to maybe 650 for the street. A 3388 cam should be fine. I might end up switching to a 6480 cam if anything, but there's a 99% chance I'll keep the 3388 in there.

Mark Broviak has a very similar truck (white lightning) and he's running these pistons in like 15.5:1. Why so low? I don't know a whole lot about compression ratio and it's effect on performance, but I would think with a bigger charger on a daily driven truck, you would want more compression to spool the turbo faster? Not sure if any of this is correct, just thinking out loud I guess.

Every time you tear into the motor you will spend 1000 bucks even if you don't change a thing. Not many people start out and stay there. They always want more. So it is wise to build around growing and you will save money I the end. Lower compression helps protect the piston from damages. Too low and there is problems when used daily driving. Street use 16 to 16.5 is a good place to be.

As far as I know right know we have the highest engine dyno sheet on the cast oval pistons at 1763hp 2453ftlbs in the 3,750-4,000rpm range 100psi boost on triple 75's like Brett's running without piston issues. This was done on our very low reading engine dyno compared to others out there.:thumb:


As far as 15.5:1 being so low, it's really not that low. You guys may think so but it is all relative to what, when, how you want to make power. At stock power levels the higher compression is fine but when you turn up the boost and hp the compression fights against you(more importantly your short block). It is no different than the gas engines, when you start adding/turning the boost up you need to drop compression if you expect it to live much of a life. Most of my pullers in 2.5, 2.6, 3.0 classes are running compression ratios from 12.5-14.0:1 ranges to help them run far more rpm's and make more hp at those higher rpms. To Each there own but it is working for me and I plan to keep going this direction even though Jon's giving me a lot of shit over it!:thumb:
