For time being.. Replace the same 5100 that are on there..As plan is to be rolling in the frieghtmut by the year's end, which I got bilisten shock park numbers for it too.

If I wasnt swapping.. I'd seriously look at the 5160s, if they have identical valving, see about getting some setup like 10% stiffer, Definitely​ something that was designed/valved for a ~6000lb axle

Figured the information could​ be useful that tows heavy, be it RV, heavy truck.. heavy wheels etc

If the 5100 base wasn't enough 7100 base is next step which is roughly 2x more than 5160s

Adam, stiffer valving would actually heat the oil up faster and kill the oil/wear parts quicker when you are loaded down

A bigger body shock or running two shocks per corner with half the valving in each one would be the best way to make them last and stay cool but that's twice the amount of shock and twice the increase of an issue if you go with two shocks per corner.

The nice thing with a fox or bilstein 7100 is the ifp valve in the resi. It means nitrogen stays separate of the oil and you get no cavitation. The oil stays cooler, parts don't wear as quick, and valving works more effectively

Personally if I were you, I'd buy a set of foxs, a nitrogen fill kit and rebuild them every 75-100k. You can change the oil and service the wear bands inside on all 4 in a day (half day at the rate you move). Get the good racing oil and they may last longer. They are really simple once you do one

Depends on how much value you put into the ride quality. I personally won't drive one the rides bad for very long before I cave and buy better suspension parts. Maybe I'm wierd but that means a lot to me. It's one of the first things I address, I'm looking into options for my 1500 now. It has a cheap lift and I hate how it rides, trying to wrap my head around the coil overs. Have you done any 1500's James?

The 5100s are definitely one of the best shocks off the shelf for under $100.00
For my application it's been swap them out once a year or 100k or so. Rear shocks got put last half of December 2015, plus the 118,000 miles of 2016 and the 35-40,000miles so far of 2017.

When one realizes avg person may keep their vehicle for 50k or 3-5 years that's the avg designed services life of shocks.. puts things in perspective

The 5100s are definitely good for 100k. Pending how often I was heavy and road conditions I drove it's a give n take actually service life..

If I was keeping it as primary truck I'd already have 3 or 4link air ride on the rear axle...:thumb:

Yes sir, I had built my own gmc 1500 with 20" of front end travel and 19" in the rear :D. That was on an older body style but the new stuff is easier to work with

Thanks! I absolutely love them. Very bright stop and turn signals and no one around me has this style yet. I like to be different I guess. The only downside I've seen so far is a bit of moisture gets in around the top of you wash them and spray lots of water directly in them. But just gets to the deal. Not the lights itself.
