Is it normal for my truck to start extremely hard now? It’s happened twice now below 30. You remote start it starter disengages and it dies right away. It tries to start and dies right away. After trying like 5 times it will finally stay running but is lopey and revs up to like 1900 then comes back down and purs like a kitten

Do a compression test :D Hopefully your good and it's just glow plugs, fuel bleeding off, sticky FPRV, ect.

Does it haze for a little bit?

Edit: I forgot LMM's code for plugs so probably not that :(

Just did 8 new glow plugs. I have a race plug. Only does it when it’s below 30 degrees. How could compression affect that? 40 degreees and she fires right up. Pretty big puff of white when it does fire and it’s real cold

You need to verify your glow plugs are getting juice from the glow plug controller.

Wait until your truck is good and cold. Then use a voltmeter to test one of the wires going to one of the glow plugs. Have someone turn the key on and see if your getting juice to the glow plugs.

You might have a blown mega fuse or bad controller. But if not your in the first phase of "short rod syndrome"..... Denial. Lol

It started fine before the turbo and cp3 in the cold and I have not drove it any harder now than I used too. Almost positive I’m getting power from glow plugs. How would short rods cause it start hard when it’s really cold?

Diesels run off compression and compression is low with bent rods. Low compression means harder cold starts.

Stock filter head? Aren't cylinder pressures typically higher with stock sticks versus a larger injector at same hp levels?

honestly you may ask mark about it and see if he can adjust the regulator table slightly on that pump and see if that cures it

Is it normal for lbz/lmm to bend rods on stock fuel?

all depends but prior to low torque tuning, it still happened more than guys wanted it to.

even at 30*, it should still fire off without glowplugs. my rig starts first try in 20* temps and no glow plugs and i have lower compression pistons than you. something isnt right...

Stock filter head is gone. 1/2” hose straight to cp3. Had to try starting it abor 6 times today and she was a lopey bitch revved up to 1900rpm then came back down and idled fine. Was 28 out this morning. Even cycled the plugs a few times

watch rail pressure next time its cold. watch from the time it cranks till it fires till it comes to a nice idle. log it if you can too

Ya I’m hoping it’s just a fuel issue with the 10mm. I get a little lope coming to a stop too everytime, mark told me to get him a log and he can correct that

What's your compression ratio? My brothers truck will not start without glow plugs below 35 or so degrees. Stock LML pistons in an otherwise stock setup LLY. With glow plugs it pops right off.

stock LB7 pistons cut down .010 and delipped all by socal diesel. should be around the 16.5 range but with my p to h clearance, my dynamic ratio is pretty low compared to a stock truck. i have not had glow plugs in it since i did the head swap two years ago. i have them here and the wiring to put them in if i ever need to but no issues yet. she gets a good haze below 50* but never sputters or lopes horribly like josh states.

So the haze is normal with 16.5 compression? Mine hazes pretty good below 50* I thought an injector was bad lol but it idles normal and doesn't have any knocks or ticks. One injector is borderline when cold but at operating temp it's 0.8

my haze is from 100% over injectors. on stock injectors, i got no haze till under 30* and it was minimal. got worse as it got colder though. with glow plugs, i wouldnt get haze till single digits or colder and sitting all night with no block heater.
