Seen vids of that last hook over on CompD... sure would been nice to see how you placed if it didn't take 60 ft before it lit!! Are you leaving at a certain temp? Seems like it needs to hang out a little longer to build the fire a little more??? A friend used to battle lighting issues as well and he'd sit at a certain RPM for what seemed like forever and it would finally start building heat and then it would push through the brakes (2nd gear starts) and off she'd go.

That bastage comes to life tho when she does finally light off!!! Holy crap!!

Yeah, it was hard to tell by the video, but it was probably more like 100ft before it lit, i was trying something different to see if it would light quicker, it didnt work well. I tried something different in the open class to, but it still wouldnt light. I think a charger of this size just needs first gear starts, as it needs rpms to light, like 3500+.

It might be time for a converter refresh.... Maybe, maybe not...LOL It has worked flawless for 2 years. Doesn't seem to want to come up near as high as earlier this year.

What kind of rpm can you hold at with a 2nd gear start?? How about 3rd?

Are you still running 3.73 gears?

Just curious.

With 3rd gear start i can hold up to around 2800rpms, i didnt pay attention on the 2nd gear start, i was watching my egts. Neither one is enough, i think it needs around 3500+ to light. So most likely i will just start out in 1st next year. The truck has 4.56 gears.

A divided housing might help out a bit. I had an undevided housing on my old turbonetics turbo. It was real lazy to spool. Usually took 75 to 100 ft to light but hold on once it was lit. If you can get that monster to spool that's gonna be one nasty combo :thumb:

I understand the mechanic advantage (lower gearing) to a 1st gear start getting you up in RPMs faster, however, if you think it's lazy to light from a 2800 to 3500rpm sweep, all be it with higher gears, how do you think it'll do starting in first at a considerably lower RPM (guessing if you can stall 2100 in 1st, 4LO you'd be doing good). I'm sure that can be helped some through tuning but no more so than can be helped with a 2nd or 3rd gear start.

It'll be interesting to see how you get it to work out. I totally understand the frustrations of lighting chargers fast.

Maybe a winter project to help it is a manual trans conversion? :D. jk but it would be one way to do it.

Better carry some extra CVs with you.;)

Hmm i never thought about that, im assuming its because of trying to stall the converter in 1st? Wakeman starts out in first and ive never seen him break a cv. Im not quite sure what ill do next year for sure, a clutch infront of the allison would be cool.

Would it be legal where you pull?

Not sure, i mean schieds rules said oem trans out of 1 tons pickups, but they let that ford with the cummins/danco pull. I guess it depends on who you are and where your pulling most likely.

Yeah but most rules also state "aftermarket internals allowed". That is left way open to interpretation........

If someone manufactures a kit to put a clutch in front of an ally then it would be an aftermarket component.

That's how they got billet blocks legalized in pro-stock tractor pulling. Someone had enough pull to get Case IH to give a Hyper-max block an OEM part number, (albeit with a HUGE price tag) and voila, they are legal by the way the rules are written.

True, or someone could even say the rules say stock transmission, the allison is there just not its converter. Im sure theres ways around it, just depends how much you want to push it. It would be cool either none the less.
