I don't want to get in a pissing match, but the delays are significant. Here is a plot at/near idle. Cold chamber, but not a stone cold engine.

Point is, the injection delay is real, significant, and must be accounted for when tuning. I can pull a dozen plots to show how it varies with boost, ECT, RPM, rail pressure and timing. Does anyone really care? Probably not.

As always....What do I know?


John, are talking about injection ignition delay? or just injection delay? Both have there validity here.

Injection Delay
injection delay is the time between commanded injection and accual injection of diesel fuel into the combustion chamber. Fuel pressure, and duration can change the way a injector injects fuel and the time in which it injects fuel onto the piston,or combustion chamber. pre, main, and post injections can be altered and affected by changes to the fuel system and it's opperating and mechanicle components.

Diesel Fuel Injection Ignition Quality
The ignition quality of diesel fuel is linked to the ignition delay time, the time between the start of injection and the start of combustion cycle, longer delay means later burn, no or minimal delay means quicker burn. This is normally controlled by cetain rating in diesel fuel. the higher the number the quicker the ignition quality, the lower the number that slower, or later the ignition quality. All this makes a big difference when your talking thousands of a second......

Another race weekend!

Not just talking but racing and no burn't piston's again. It's almost getting boring going to the races and not working on it. I forgot it blew a intercooler boot so I did have to replace that. Jeff

Yes, the fuel will still be burning when the exhaust valve opens. Some race diesels blow flames out the pipe.

Let me ask you this. Is there anyway to monitor the temps in the combustion chamber to see whats going on inside the engine??

Not that I know of. Closest thing would be oil temperature, but by the time you see it going nuts (the sensor is very slow, and it takes time to get 10 qts of oil hot), it's probably too late.

Apples to oranges, but our RacePak shows an increase of approx. 5* oil temp with mild AAT (70-85) and a bit over 10* with 95+ air temp...I agree, sensor reacts way too slow to be able to pull your foot off of the floor...

Knowledge is the best additive!

might want to ask someone else on fuel additives. i hear ATF is the shiz-nit though!:D

Don't knock me out if this sounds stupid but is there any way you could use the glow plug hole to put a guage in?
