Sadly, for both Ben and Nick, its a bad situation. Looks like Nick got screwed by his machinist, and Ben (and the rest of the customers) are taking the hit.

Yes, those pics are of the parts in question.

But, IMO, its certainly not helping that more than a few people are putting their 2 cents in when they really shouldnt be. Best advice is if you dont have a dog in that fight, then just keep quiet.

I just hope, for everyone's sake, that it all gets sorted out.

Well, I think the clown who started this thread is a troll. I sent them a PM.

Yes, it's a bad situation all around. If indeed the rods are weaker than stock, and the rods meet the blueprint specifications, the machine shop is off-the-hook legally. Whoever was responsible for the engineering (machinists aren't engineers) should be liable. But if they weren't an ME (mechanical engineer), then they probably aren't liable for anything more than their charges for drawing the blueprints. Basically, you ask a machine shop to make what you want, and if they make it to your spec, they did their job.

I'd rather folk keep discussions about engine failures on a technical level, so they can be useful to others. Let's keep flames out of this please.

I'm moving this to Hard Parts.

PS - I was a machinist for years at both job shops and aerospace, and now I do inspections for them, so I've seen this alot, and have even been used as an expert witness in court cases in this area.

The Diesel Place is so full of garbage these days. It's not even really worth going to anymore.

EDIT: This is my last reference to Diesel Place on this message board EVAR! I hope others follow suit.

I was going to post this "over there", but decided it doesn't belong in that thread:

There shouldn't be "standing up" on either side. Parts is Parts. They have no human qualities, and don't care if you love them or hate them.

If the name on the box changes what's inside, then you got a problem.

While I have disagreements with certain folk, my opinions on parts doesn't change based on the maker.

Good point Pat. Here that makes sense. Here we'd Stand up for the Part" but on DP there actually like 10 posters in that whole thread that actually have had there heads off there block, lol. and on the DP it seems more about the name or the person rather than the part all together. Hell if you dont read the first post over there, you wouldnt even know the thread is about rods, and think it was about 2 guys, lol. I hope both partys come out good in this, and I also hope those "rods" were in fact stronger than what they were "compared" to.

However on the other hand, I would rather a manuf. take my case and analyze it and see who is liable, like what seems to be going on now. That is where the name WILL be important to me.

Ok I'm not talking tech now, oops.

X2, my friend owns a computer business and taught me about DNS servers and Viewpoint and pinging and I was forever afraid to go into a Wi-Fi cafe again!!

on edit: to stay on topic, I feel for both parties as I helped Ben for a day and saw the carnage and what he went through just to get a new motor together. but Nick is getting my benefit of a doubt since he did go public with the issue and he has also been a genuine guy in the past. can only hope that nothing like this happens to an even bigger vender here in the future.

Folk on this board pretty much know me because I do stupid stuff in pickups. :D

My real job is that I run a testing laboratory. I take testing seriously. Before that I was a machinist. My job as an inspector, is to insure parts are manufactured to the blueprint. My job as a machinist was to make parts per blueprint that passed inspection. People's lives depend on my skills and opinions. Medical devices, aircraft, missiles, cars, everything is made by the pairing of the two skills. And defined by engineering. You can make a part to print, you can verify it complies, but if it wasn't engineered by someone with solid experience, there is going to be problems.

This is a system you stake your lives on every time you back out of the driveway, get aboard a plane, or roll into an operating room. If one of the three is missing, someone is going to get hurt eventually.

It's pretty obvious that at least one of those was missing, if not two.

This was not an attempt to bring a better product to market. This was an attempt to see if you could save money by skipping steps.

Pat, blitz636 (dusty) brings up the idea that the metal used could have been out of spec, unbeknwnst to Nick or anyone else. Is there any way that you could work with Nick and Ben to test a couple of the rods to see if they met stress requirements? Maybe we could ask Mat (nwpadmax) to help, as I think he's a metalugist, isnt he?
I seem to remember when these came out that they were made with 4140 steel, where others use 4340. Is this correct? Would this have been part of the problem?

Do you guys now see what I meant about not posting in that thread unless you had a dog in the fight? The mods had to come in and clean it all up, which seems to just get the anger level up even further. Just an ugly situation all around.
I have always been afraid of someone screwing up the install of one of my cabin filter kits and blaming me for it. It would easily be a $2500 bill to replace an entire HVAC duct system.
