LLY: Lly finally left me stranded!!!

Well at 215k miles and one tornado he old dmax left me stranded!! Lol. It started yesterday when I started the truck the check engine light came on and have me a p0016 code which is crankshaft sensor. I cleared it and went on my way. It only came on when I would start the truck and it started and ran fine until now. On my way back from a rangers game I was pulling onto the interstate and got in it about 3/4 throttle then let off to set the cruise. It sputtered for a second so I went to press the gas pedal and it started knocking and smoking and losing power. Pulled over and it was just black smoking. Shut it off cleared codes started it and it idle but was smoking the whole time. Shut it off for a bit then checked to make sure sensor was still plugged all the way in and then went to see if it would start and it wouldn't. SOOO got a bud to pull it to the house. Any ideas on what it might be before I start on it? I'm hoping its just the sensor that went bad and not the timing chain or something internal.

lucky for you, there is no timing chain! might have blown a boot or something, maybe an injector connector

I'm positive it's not a boot. I've blown a boot before. Lol. It's got to do with the crankshaft sensor. Didn't get any codes for any of the injectors, just crankshaft sensor codes. It still turns over fine and I didn't hear anything clanging around just injector knock when id push the gas pedal.

Doubt its a broken crank shaft,, Sounds like a electrical and or Injector/fuel related issue.. Does it crank over a few turns and then stop? Or does it just keep turning over until you let off the key? I had a crank sensor go bad and it would turn over 3 or 4 times and then stop. Replaced sensor and she fired right up.. Even if the boots were completly off or the turbo was shot the truck would still start FYI....

I feel like you would definitely know if you broke the crank...

That's what I'm thinking. Just never know though. It was running fine as I pulled over no clanging or anything just injector knock when I was pushing the gas pedal in guessing because the sensor went out and it was over fueling it, which is why it was doing it at idle to. Idling it was smoking and kinda knocking then after that it just wouldn't start but when I turn it over it sounds fine, no clanging or here anything that's not normal

More than likely you variable timing now because your reluctor wheel has come loose....You should be able to take the sensor out and slide a screwdriver or finger and check to see if there's play. If there is, you will need to take the front cover off to fix. Give me a call at the shop if you have any questions. Matt

It lets me just crank on it until I let off the key for about 5 seconds is all I've gone. I have only tried turning it over like three times max then i would wait awhile.

Possibly an injector that has failed/stuck open causing the noise and smoke. And now it's stuck open so bad it wont build fuel pressure? Just some ideas.

If it would start and idle, you could look at balance rates. But without it starting, no real way to know which injector. If there was an electrical problem, the computer should have set a code for the bad injector.

instead of throwing parts at it, why dont you pull up the CKP pid and log it while cranking? then if that shows its bad, pop the sensor out and check the reluctor wheel for play.

Just tryin to save you the headache of buying a part you may not need.

Didn't think it would log while cranking, I will give it a try when I get home.
