Well hell, while everybody is BSing:

This is a C32 powering the forward genset on a rig supply boat that I rebuilt earlier this year. It's basically two C15's:

Setting the valves and injectors. Aftercooler, intake piping, and day tank still disconnected.

This engine has about 20k hours on it. Probably could have gone half that again before absolutely needing an overhaul, but these guys don't like failures.

Here's main propulsion. Two C280's at about 5,000shp each. High idle is 990rpm. Chief engineer said that they burn around 8000 gallons of fuel a day at full load. Ship's capacity is around 300k gallons. I don't want to pay their fuel bills.

That doesn't look too fun. The engines aren't that bad to work on with the proper tools and equipment though...

The setup I worked on was 2 of the 10000 horse De Laval / Enterprise engines and a tandem (5000 hp combined) EMD 2 stroke setup. These were used as emergency generators, the De Lavals were rated at 7.7 Megawatts and the EMD was rated at 3.3 Megawatts.

HOLY SMOKES. That generator in the first photo is a monster. I couldn't imagine working on something like that. A generator makes sense though.

That would be a big butter churner.

Now that I think about it. I may recall a ship piston bore being wider than a guy is tall. I remember seeing a picture of a guy standing inside one. I will see if I can Google it.

It's big enough you can get in the crank case and walk around. The cam lobes have hookups for a porter power to remove them. The heads are individual to each cylinder and the turbos are massive, and they whistle like crazy when she's wound up. The BMEP (brake mean effective pressure) for the De Laval / Enterprise is 225 (anything above 200 is considered a "hot rod").

I'd say that could make some butter.

I assume a couple of you guys work for CAT? We just had a 621F scraper blow up that had a 3406B in it. CAT liners and pistons each hole was 1,000 a hole. That's on a small engine! They ended up buying a reman from CAT since it trashed the head. The price on that yellow painted stuff is unreal.

Nice pics guys!! Yeah I've been working for empire Cat since early 2011. Started in the engine shop, I'm currently at one of the rental outlying stores doing semi transport upkeep and DOT rental equipment. Only one on day shift with a CDL and I like it that way

Louisiana Cat here. Yeah, they can be pricey. Had a 140H that fragged a couple of gears in the trans after it ate some coupler bolts. Tore it apart and quoted over 30k in parts, and a 140H is far from an expensive trans.

I need to find the price I looked up of a C175 20 cyl CP3 pump price, I pooped my pants when I first saw it, IIRC it was over 40 grand.

I'll look when I get back to work from shut-down. 40K prob isn't far off. Do you work on any C175's there or primarily 3500's?

Primarily 3508's and 3516's when I was in the engine shop. I lived in the tear down bays.

Never worked on the common rail C175's, only been to a bunch of classroom training for them for the Tier4/final stuff. Our overhead crane at the time didn't have the capacity for them.
