Thanks Mike, I will do that. I talked to George at Suncoast (awesome guy!) he thinks the internal filter may have fallen out, or is about to fall out, so I am going to pull the pan tomorrow after work and replace the internal filter, and put on a new spinon and magnet. I really hope this fixes it! -Jeff

Good luck, let us know if that help

I'm having trans issues that seem to be almost the same as you, only difference was I had no movement of the truck at all till I unplugged the trans in the back and put it into hyd. mode, the when I plugged it back in it seems to be the same as yours, with no codes which really has me confused:confused:

I'm no tranny expert but not getting sufficient fluid when you are wot on the shifts sounds like a good place to start looking. You have the deep tranny pan with the suncoast 5, Mike is there enough room in there for the deep neck filter to come off, or loose prime due to a loose connection at the neck of the filter?

I've seen the filter gromet fit real loose on a lot of cores I've rebuilt. A close look shows that the inside ribs of the gromet are gone and is worn smooth inside. I'm sure this allows the filter to flop around and could create a suction leak. There's going to be some movement of the filter and this will wear the gromet, this is why Suncoast came up with their filter lock. This is why I feel it's necessary to service the internal filter also; alot of people only change the spin on--filters and fluid are cheap.

I totaly agree with the filter movement inside the pan and the wear on the gromet causing loose fit and suction problems.
The Suncoast filter lock was actually developed because the filters in the deep pan would fall out. Suince the filters are made of plastic, I don't think the manufacturer can keep a tight tolerance from filter to filter and therfore some will be looser than others. I talked to an Allison engineer a couple of years ago and he was aware of the problem and was going to increase gromet thickness by five thousands. I don't think they did it.

is the internal filter supposed to be solid or does it have some movement to it? I dropped the pan, fluid was like brand new, there was no sludge or metal shavings in the pan and I found out that I do I have the Filter lock!!

The internal filter was sloppy, had about 1/8" movement up and down and left to right, when I pulled it out the grommet stayed inside the hole, had to use a pick to get it out.

I put the new filter in and tightened the lock, then I put the pan back on, that was about all I had time to do during my lunch break. I will put the fluid back in after work and see what happens....

ok, it seems better, but it is still doing it, the harshness has reduced ALOT. I am hoping that it is just the transmission learning again, I have not reset TAPS yet, but the transmission is still downshifting pretty rough. I was pulling out of a parking lot on my way home and the trans acted like it didnt know what gear to go into then it finally figured it out and shifted kind of slow. I will drive it again tomorrow and see how it goes. I am not holding my breath...

it hasnt flared a shift yet..... but it is still downshifting REALLY hard when stopping, and a quick stop and go will get the trans confused still, but I only drove it like 6 miles, it does seem to be getting better ( now that I have said that I probably jinxed myself.) -Jeff

I know you don't have a Tech 2 so drive it and go through the up and down shifts a lot. Concentrate on the wierd shifts, the more it goes through these cycles the faster it'l self learn.

doing it again.... and the trans is getting really hot, 57 deg outside, no load and the trans is around 200 deg. the only time it has ever been that hot is when towing or when it has been over 80deg. outside.

i think mike will tell you that isnt really that hot. but the only thing that will make a tranny really overheat is a plugged filter and a bad converter. i might be off though

Ok, on my way to work today everything seemed fine, it seems when the truck is totally stock everything is ok, but if I put ANY extra power to it it starts to tweak out again. I dont see how it can be the tune doing it because it ran fine for a year before any of this started. I am at my wits end!!

if it were me the trans would have been pulled by now and either inspected by me or sent to suncoast . i know you dont want to pull it ... nobody ever does , me included but sometimes its the only way . does your big power tune have a stock tcm section to it ... if it doesnt you arent ruling out wether its the tune , or more power that is causing it , and also are you going through the relearn after switching tunes because alot of tune switching with power levels diff , is really going to confuse your tcm .

i can rule out the tune because i did not change the tune for a year before this started.

i would not trust that fact if it were me . not saying it is but in diagnosing something you have to be very methodical.
