I haven't done many DIY projects on my truck other than routine maintenance, and minor bolt ons. So far I have been pretty lucky, with the exception of the truck not starting for 2 hours because I screwed up with the programming:eek:. In the spring I plan to get more in depth, so I'm sure I will have some stories. :D

Installed a lbz fender duct 2 weeks ago, but since my ranchhand replacement bumper was in the way of installing it from the bottom, I decided to increase the airflow even more by opening up the inner fender and dropping it in from the top. What I didnt realize was that as I was fighting with the sawzall on the fender, it was dimpling and crinkling the paint on the outer fender. This would be the new fender I put on several months ago

Glad I know a good paint and body man :D

I nearly crippled myself once on a DIY project.

I was installing a floor shifter in a Ford pickup in the driveway. The driveway had a slight incline. I hooked up the linkage and everything was cool, took it for a test drive, but it needed just a touch more adjustment. I climbed underneath and tried to adjust it, but I couldn't reach it easy. So I popped it in neutral from underneath to make it easier. OPPSS!! The truck started rolling backwards with me underneath it. Guess I forgot to set the parking brake. I'm crawling on my elbows as fast as I can trying to out from under the truck, and it barely misses me, rolls across the street and up on a neighbor's lawn. But nothing was hurt.

Would have loved to have been the neighbor watching. Just sittiing on the front lawn having a beer and you stroll over with the car.

you should have seen the look on my face when i figured out what happened, I was patting myself on the back for being smart enough to go in from the top, then looked down and saw the damage.

at one point i had to use a ton of extensions and an impact from behind the tranny to loosen the up-pipe bolts

the whole project sucked

Iv'e had my fair share lol

Most of my stuff is lost in time though. seems like I should multiply 2-3 times what its supposed to take.

heres one that will waste a lot of time...Install a clutch disc backwards, lol. (it even is printed on the disc which side goes to trans)...

:Dbought tow mirrors for my truck 500 miles after i bought it. pulling the door panels off, i broke my driver side. put about a 10" long crack in it. so i put it back together. then they start to rattle like crazy. so took it to the dealer and said my door panels rattle.

"uh... somehow your doorpanel is cracked so we have to get new one. "

now new door panel and no rattles:D

for the most part no major screwups, but definately tend to take my time on some stuff:baby:

Years ago had a Honda that needed brakes. Start jacking the car up with some POS jack, start trying to get the jack stands under it, then the car starts falling of the jack. Damn jack stand goes thru the oil pan.

I'm a DIY'er through and through, I love doing my own work and fabbing things. I have saved myself a good chunk of cash and will contnue to do so! I've modded my own CP3,
FCA, made my own drop shackles out of the stockers, gauges, lighting, mounts, exhaust, etc, its a big list! I've done a ton of custom exhaust work for others too. I used to have a 93 Ranger that I lowered 6/6 inch drop for $20 in hardware! It usually takes me a long time but im picky too. Im a DIY fool:rofl:

some stupid stuff:
Chrome-Vanadium wrench/starter welding (who hasn't done that though ;))
Left the CP3 fuel feed line loose= diesel all over the bay and underside of the truck
Left an LB7 injector fitting loose and filled the motor with diesel

Use 1 ton jacks to hold a 5 ton truck..... Barely got out of there with my head on my shoulders.

Left a pry bar laying on the radiator shroud when I pulled the alt off.... Made it about 1/2 mile before a loud bang, followed by some clangs, clunks and odd thumping sounds and the new alt I had just put on needed to be replaced along with both power steering lines and the lower radiator hose.....

edit: seems like a lot of these stories involve jacks.... :D

decided the best place to run my egt and boost gauge into the truck was by drilling a 1/4" hole through the rubber boot where the wiring harness goes through the firewall...drill grabbed hard and caught and wrapped some of the wires and broke them... no money to fix it...but talk about tedious work digging through that loom and soldering wires and reinsulating a bunch of them:eek:

Started to drop a fuel tank so that I could replace the pump in a buddies rented garage. Couldn't do it myself because the tank was almost full of fuel. Came back the next morning to see gas running out the garage, down the driveway and into the street:eek:...one of the fuel lines I tied up slipped out and was allowing the tank to drain.

Installed a set of extra leaf springs on a van in my sisters garage. Springs lifted the van 2" I couldn't get it out...had to take the tires off and use the floor jack to get it out:rolleyes:
