It was in the single digest yesterday and fired up just fine after sitting 10+ hours. I'm about to see how it does this morning with it being in the singles again. Only difference is that it's been down for 16 hours.

Yesterday afternoon it blew out a bunch of blue-ish smoke, should I be concerned? Only does it when cold like this.

Batteries are new. Cycled the plugs twice. Shit, I even sprayed a little shot of ether into the intake for that extra boost ( I did say little, remember ) and still no cigar:(

What was the temp buddy? If your fuel is gelled up you can be screwed too. You have any PS-911 and an extra filter?

-37C I checked for gelled fuel just in case by cracking the filter. It's good to go. A buddy is coming by to give me a boost.

This is the first time I've had trouble with my Dually. But I know that my Glow Plug control module took a shit. That in itself could be the problem. If I can't get one soon I'll look into just replacing the relay. I've heard it's been done before.

-15 windchill here today. Dually was not happy. It was hesitant. I could feel it was on the verge of gelling the fuel.

You should start fine with out ether. I'd replace the glow plugs.

I always plug mine in any time it's below 20 deg F, as others have said it warms up faster and starts easier.
I've added a heating pad to my transmission so I can warm up my transmission fluid too, I'm glad I did that too.

I may not have to do all this but it starts SO much better. Even with my pickup plugged in this Sunday when it was -20 deg F I cycled the glow plugs 3 times just as a safety measure; it started better doing that than just cycling them once last weekend.

I have done it and it worked for me and it was way less money.

If the glow plugs / module is bad, just unplug them all and start it on ether. Pretty much all of our older MF tractors need ether to start around zero or below if not plugged in.

Mine always started multiple times in the teens without the glowplugs hooked up(I was working on getting a broken tip out for a while). I have a lot of faith in the duramax's ability to atomize fuel and cold starting don't worry me too much after what I've seen, with good batteries of course. That being said, I plug mine in every night in winter, it starts up the next morning very easily, no smoke, smooth running, and cabin heat comes much quicker. Fuel mileage is also much better after being plugged in overnight.

i thought ether was a no no on our trucks

It is a bad idea if you have the grid heater or the glow plugs hooked up (light it up on contact and "backfire", if both of those are unhooked it isn't great but you might need it to start if it is stupid cold

Good battery's and glow plugs, you won't have a problem starting. I had 100k mile glow plugs on my 01 with brand new battery's. i plugged my truck in the night before at 9, but my breaker popped at my apartment when my buddy pulled in 20 minutes after and plugged his in. I woke up at 8 the next morning (-45 below zero all night) and went to start my truck. Cycled the glow plugs 3 times, didnt want to start, but did. Do those things, with a synthetic oil and you should be problem free.

Must be nice. My GP controller is shot and maybe a couple plugs to and it sounds worse than a civic with a fart pipe in 30F or below! Not trying to hijack, but can someone educate me on just replacing the relay and not the whole controller?
