Does Wind Chill Affect the Morning Cold Start?

I plug mine in anytime below 30. Just warms up quicker and sounds so much happier. I'm driving it tomorrow in single digit weather because of a chance of snow and the G8 becomes a hockey puck in it. :D

Your truck doesn't trip a cel light after being plugged in at those temps?

My wife woke up when I started my service truck this morning. (you could drive a dump truck through a power plant and I don't think she would wake up) She said it sounded like I was kicking the back of my service truck when it started up then I walked in the back door lol.

Do you unplug it before starting it? Some get a CEL if they don't but I though it was only the 06s+. To fix that GM made the block heater not work unless it was below 0.

I don't remember now, I think it has done it both ways... I don't worry about it anymore, it doesn't affect performance and the cel goes out on its own. I only leave it plugged in all the time at work:angel:

The only thing wind will do is pull the heat out of your truck faster once you shut it off. The only time I plug in a diesel is if I know it won't hardly start other wise. Since he never has plugged it in I don't really see the point now. I hope you at least use SYN oils.

Why if wind doesn't affect it?

When you do start it then it will warp up quicker. Dont have all the wind blowing threw the front end.

I plug mine in all the time and it never sets a light. With bent rods, I would plug it in when it was 60* outside to keep it from smoking out the shop.

What kind of power does the block heater draw?
Mine draws a little over 900 Watts. I only plug it in when it is below 20°F because I have to pay for the power (and I only have 6 working glow plugs). If I had all 8 working glow plugs, I'd let it get colder.

When I don't pay for the power, I plug it in anytime it is below 40°F because it starts a lot easier and you get heat faster.

Windchill makes it get cold faster, but it cannot take it below the temp. So -20 with a windchill of -40 is saying that you will get to -20 faster, and for your body to keep a normal temp you would have to dress like it was -40 to account for the wind.
I added a stick on 300 watt heater to my trans pan and my oil pan and plug it in for a few hours when it is in the teens, and just leave it plugged in below 0. I took a heavy 3 outlet cord and routed it so all 3 plug in, and I have the cord wrapped around the tow hooks, so just have to plug in 1 thing. In below 0 temps I would get some sort of fuel filter heater (stock head does have one), if you get any sort of bad fuel that will help a lot (trace water won't get caught by the separator but will cause the fuel to jell below 0F)

Thanks. You can get them at Walmart sometimes, or on Amazon (here). Either way they are about $18, and totally worth it.

It shows instant power use, and keeps track of the total energy used so you can see how much something costs you overnight, for example. My truck uses about 8-9 kWh a night, since it is not on a timer. At my electricity rate, that works out to about $1/night. A timer would probably pay for itself, lol.

My LLY was started at 50 below without being plugged in. My LMM has been started without at 45 below. I do cycle the glow plugs twice though. Only time I plugged it in was for my wife when it was that cold and she was taking it to work early in the morning. Leather seats without heat suck ass

Has to be something wrong with it. 5*F outside and mine started fine NOT plugged in, sat for 12hrs at work overnight.
